Under-Hood Insulation

Guys,



Can anyone tell me what the purpose is for the underhood insulation that is fastened to the underside of the hood. Was told it keeps the paint from baking off the hood????? Heck the paint on my valve covers aint baked off yet



I'd sorta like to remove this.



The newer trucks ain't got any insulation at all... ... . do they still have the paint on the hood or did they get painted with exhaust manifold paint?



It it for sound deadening? You know how the general public hates loud diesel engines Go stand next to a new one and you'd think the guy simply put the Cummins badge on the truck for effect.

Hi Scott -- my understanding is that it is for noise control only. Heck, it probably gets hotter sitting in an Arizona parking lot than it does running down the road on a hot day.

I've had a couple of Fords that I removed the hood insulation from with no ill effects to the paint. Now that I think about it, didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference on the noise level either . . .

Noise control, plus help keep the mighty Cummins warm. I ripped mine out on the 89. Before you go ripping and thrashing it, some folks are looking for it, and prefer it. There was debris and dust and such everywhere when I removed mine, make sure the motor isn't opened up.

Mine is in good shape, but it drops little tiny peices of dirt/dust and flaky stuff all over the engine I just painted and polished. Wonder if the Cummins rattle would be anymore noticable??



When I had the engine opened up I had to keep it covered. Going to be installing valve springs and don't want another mess like I just fought off.

Heck , I just bought some to install on my 02. It did help out ith the noise some.

At least put it on ebay or the classifieds for someone else to have. Can you still buy this stuff new?
