Under the hood, there's a liner" that's attached. Not sure what you would call it.

Well on my truck, some of the clips are missing, broken and the liner itself has lost it's rigidity and it's sagging.

I was wondering if this serves a real purpose?

Maybe noise damping. newer 2nd gen trucks (01'-02') were not made with a hood liner, like my '02. If I were you I would tear it off and not worry about it.

I wonder if that's what makes the newer 2nd gens so much louder in teh cab? My roomate bought an 01 or 02 and it's loud inside the truck compared to mine.

I have had one on both my 2001 model trucks. One is a srw the other was a drw.

Somebody told me it was a heat barrier for the hood.

Mine too is sagging and if it serves no purpose i will take it off

My 01. 5 has it, but a squirrel has... moved some of it into the bottom of the airbox. I thought about taking it off. I would like to know if it helps with noise, or temps. . does it help in the winter in Minnesota? that sort of thing. .

My '01. 5 didn't come with it from the factory - so after my father in law bought me one and I installed it I saw/heard/felt no difference. Not sure the purpose but I'd be it was for sound deadening. Just couldn't tell the diff.

I took my sagging/ripped one off my truck, and it did make it noisier.

I think there are two downsides, it will be louder, and it will heat your hood up more.

The upsides are it looks a lot better, and your engine will most likely run slightly cooler, as it will let more heat out. But I am unsure if it makes enough of a difference to justify it.

I personally will someday get around to installing a reflective aluminum insulation under my hood. I like having a liner, and wouldn't mind a little less engine noise.

I have a Refexxion Cowl Hood, and chose not to reinstall the liner from my stock hood. I cannot tell any difference in sound level, heat... . nada.

When I bought my 01. 5, it didn't have the under hood blanket. I bought one from the dealer and installed it. It made a NOTICEABLE differance in the noise!!! In my opinion, if noise doesn't matter to you, remove it. If you want your truck as quiet as possible, keep it.

Mine came without the liner too. I bought that foam and foil "Hoodliner" from Dynamat. Easy to install and made a noticeable difference inside the cab. I also like the fact that you can actually clean it too. In hind sight... . I should have used regular Dynamat on the bottom of the hood and then installed the hoodliner.

It was not a huge difference. But it was "noticeable". ;)

I would think that without some kind of liner that your paint would suffer eventually (not to mention your ears). There is a bunch of heat coming up off that exhaust side.
