Hi Folks,

I started this post in another forum but it's better suited here.

Here in the NorthEast, maintaining a clean undercarriage has been somewhat difficult. Admittedly, I haven't been consistent at keeping it clean so now I'm faced with a hearty detail job combined with some rust attention (it's not that bad, but I want it in top shape again).

I've cruised the postings on engine/underbody cleaning and rustproofing, here's what I've found:

[Assuming frequent washings with soap & water]

- Generally, be suspicious of undercarriage rustproofer/sound-deadener shops; these agents can crack and sometimes rust between metal & agent(not to give it a bad rap, there are plenty of clients with great experience). Oil-based agent shops seem very good [such as Krown ]but they're restricted to Canada, and it needs to be reapplied annually [not a bad thing, just more difficult for US-based vehicles].

- Many have great results by cleaning undercarriage, drying, then applying hydraulic fluid or AT fluid (somewhat illegal) a couple times throughout Winter and then washing off late Spring.

- Those who have cleaned undercarriage frequently from day 1 have little or no problems (not sure how many of them are from Northern, or more importantly, salt-ridden (from coastal & road salt) States though)... wish I was that disciplined.

So first order is to clean the heck out it with cleaning agent and elbow grease. Then apply something to check current rust activity, and finally apply some anti-rust agent.

Although I like the hydraulic fluid treatment, I was wondering if anybody had experience with Por-15 for undercoating?

After an exhaustive search on the web, I couldn't find any bad remarks about it, and lots of positive statements. I always like to see something negative because nothing is without drawbacks. I'm seriously thinking of going that route, but would appreciate some feedback from members.

Thanks in advance,

-Jack

I asked my body shop buddy / owner about POR products a few months ago. He has used them and siad that they do everything they say they will. The two drawbacks in his book:

1) Cost.

2) Preparation. Follow the directions exactly - do not cut any corners.

Hope this helps.

I've used POR-15 many times. It does what is says. I've put it directly over rusty trailer hitches & it sticks like to tomorrow. My brother-in-law painted the frame on his 69 camaro with it & the paint survived an engine fire (hood & engine didn't do so well).

It does require topcoating while tacky to prevent UV damage (UV makes it chalky over time without a topcoat). The ONLY downside I have ever had with it is that once it is on it's almost impossible to get back off!
