What shocks do you have?

Corey,

your problem sounds exactly like what I had up until yesterday. My question to you is what kind of shocks do you have on the front end? I had a set of Rancho 9000's on the front and almost from day one I heard a slight click/rattle with them. I just had a set of Monroe Sensatracks put on yesterday and the rattle is now gone and the truck drives like it did from the dealership.

My rattle/clunk/poping sounds got worse and worse over the last 2 months ... sounded like the cab mounts weren't even bolted. And every time I wend around a corner I would hear a popping sound.

I had tightened the bottom bolts on my front shocks to as tight as I possibly could and still the problem persisted.

If you have Rancho's on the front ... get rid of them and get something else (they are good on the back especially for towing, but are horrible on the front).

My truck has recently developed the same problem (front passenger side). I replaced the shocks hoping to fix it..... didn't work. The lower ball joints had some wear, so I replaced those also..... still didn't fix it. I think the rubber gromet at the control arm has wore and become sloppy. I'm not sure if they are pressed in, but I plan on tearing it down and replacing these also. I'm not looking forward to pulling the control arm, but I really think it's the culprit.

Well,

I went and talked to Autozone a bit ago, I'm going in next week to order some new shocks. Currently, I think the shocks are the stock ones. They are all black, no marking on them.

I hope this works!! @ $70ea, it better!

Corey

Corey,

What shocks are you looking at for $70?

There was a deal (I forget from where) on the Bilsteins recently for $55 each.

I think those are the same ones that I was looking at, they are the best ones that they offer for the truck. I don't know for sure.

Corey

Everything gets loose!

I was checking fluids, ect. and found the batteries were loose... big time. That 17. 5:1 seems to rattle just about everything loose at one time or another. I no longer shut off the Cummins when the door is open as I am sure it doesn't do the hinges any good!

The bugaboo noise I cant find is when I put in the clutch to stop and hear a slight "clunk", thought it was U-Joints, replaced all 3 and still have the clunk. Any ideas.

GO WITH THE BILSTEINS... ..... THEY ARE GOOD!

Mike

Blistiens for $55? Where? I need 8 for 2 trucks.

I had the clunk amd it turned out to be the lower shock bolt. I thought ther wheel was falling off.

While we're on the subject of clunks and noises, does anyone have an idea about a THUD that you can feel in the cab. My truck makes a bump kind of feeling when I come to stop, feels like someone rear ended you slightly, or like something is sliding forward after I've come to a stop. That's the part that's baffling me, I'll come to complete stop, and sit there for at least a second or even two, then there's a thud????

Well folks I did it. I just sprang for the shocks at Autozone. Not quite as inexpesnisve as I had hoped, but thus far, the truck has show its worth it. I hope to put these on this week, or atleast next week and will let you know how it ends up.

Kalaehina,

Do you have a tool box? I was getting something like what you were talking about and it was my hitch bouncing around in my tool box. It may just be something in side of the truck's box. Also, couple other things. Check your spare tire, is it tight against the bed? And lastly, if you stop and HOLD the brakes, does it thud, or only when you slowly release tension off the brakes? If so, start checking your driveline components. Start with the Transmission / T-case mount and then move out. My blazer was making some wierd thud sounds, ended up having a ripped motor mount & ripped trans mount.

Best of luck,

corey

I had this problem with my previous gasser 2500... turned out to be the fuel tank baffle design.

I dunno if the fuel tank design is different on the diesels.

Front End Rattles Or Gremlins?

Hi everyone, Happy new year to all! The number for Kar Products is (800) 527-7763. They have almost everything automotive. I get all the fastener doo-hicky's for my fender wells from them.

And if Corey reads this message, the bump sound that comes from my passenger front happens only when I apply the brakes and it started at around 80k with DC front shocks. I replaced with Rancho 9000's on all 4 wheels. Still has same bump sound and I too have been under the truck with a pry bar and still nothing obvious. The weather up here in Connecticut has turned really cold and the noise is now partially dormant. Maybe the grease somewhere gets stiff with the cold weather and prevents bump noise? There are these huge universal joint assemblies attached to each front wheel that drive the truck. I scheduled an appointment to have a brake and wheel shop scope this out. These parts are way to massive for me to check so gotta pay a pro. Let you know any results.

Thanks guys, I'm going to check all those things this weekend..... The thud seems to happen with brakes applied after complete stop???????

JYoung,

I'm headed back to North Carolina on or about the 10th of this month, and before I make the run, I'm replacing the shocks and doing a tire rotation, as well as supporting the truck by the frame and checking the suspension of loose components. The truck has a tendancy to hide problems when there is weight on the chassis. It may be a few days, but I'll let you guys know if I find anything. Plus, when I get home, it will be much easier for me to get into it ;)

Corey

May have found that under carriage rattle! You are not going to believe this!

You guys will not believe this.

I replaced the front shocks, no help. I even checked everything I could think of when I was working on the truck, but to no advail.

Well I just got back from the mountains, I towed a friends jeep out to go wheeling in Tellico in NC. This is the scary part. Today when I was making a sharp left turn, nearly a U turn, I heard a loud snap/pop. Then, the noise was constant. I was on my way to meet the wife, and everything else seemed alright, so I continued on my way. All in all, I drove about 4 miles. When I got home, I was driving down my street and had the windows down, I shut off the truck and the noise was AWLFUL!!!! I had also noticed that it stopped when the brakes were applied. When I got the truck in the driveway, I got under the truck and found the friggin p. s. caliper had friggin fallen off the truck!!!!!!!!!!! Granted it was still in its place, but only because the wheel was making it stay there, but the entire thing would move atleast a 1/2"!!!!

The bolts seem to still be in place, but they must be broken. I'm going to get into it tomorrow and find out what the hell happend. Keep in mind, this noise has been going on for about 4 months, and i wasn't able to find it until now. I think what had happend was one bolt broke, and the caliper wouldn't really move but tonight the other broke, and now all doo doo has hit the fan!

DAMN That sucks!

I'll keep you posted.

Corey

Ok, don't beat me...

Well let me first defend my self. I'm not quite used to the set up on these trucks as of yet. I'm still learning the difference between this truck and my GM's.

Now, here is what I found. I removed the P. S. wheel and sure enough, the caliper was loose. I pulled off the little rubber sleeves off the end of the caliper bolts, and pulled out the bolts. but when I did, they weren't broke! I removed the caliper and inspected everything. When I put the calipler back on, and re-threaded the bolt, I found that there was a LOT of play in the bolt hole in the caliper. Well what I thought was a rubber cap for the bolt to prevent corrosion, was actually a rubber sleeve that was supposed to be IN the calilper, not at the end of the bolt. I replaced both, and took care of the other side while I was at it. Now, the grinding has stopped!

I'm just glad that it wasn't the broken bolt that I had suspected. I also hope this will fix my little bump noise, I'll let you guys know when the rain stops here.

Corey

my 1997 had teh same problem, it was a combination of the inner wheel well rattling around (lost one of those cheapy plastic rivets) and the shock was loose. On my truck, even though the shock nut SEEMED tight, it was still rattling around due to the large clearance between the shaft and the hole. I put a breaker bar on the nut, gave the bar a few whacks with the sledgeomatic 2000, and the noise went away... .

Well to close this.

Seems that those little rubber boots on the caliper bolts was my problem. I replaced the shocks with some friggin expensive ones, and that didn't make a difference. I honestly don't really like the way they ride! but for $150, I'm keepin em'! The little rubber booties was all it was.

Thanks for all the suggestions,

Corey

Corey,

you repalced your shocks with Bilateins right? What don't you like about them? Are they too harsh?

Thanks for the info,

Ryan
