While I was fumbling with my flashlight tonight, I had the thought of adding some lights under the hood. Any thoughts? Halogen? Switch? Just a thought. Do any of you already have some, it can't cost that much and sure would be nice.

Yours doesn't have any?My '95s have a light with a mercury switch, comes on when you raise the hood. I like GMs system better though,a underhood light on self retracing reel that comes on when you unreel it and will reach to the rear of the truck, would come in handy for fixing a flat.

You can purchase the GM reel light and install it into your rig. I'm sure you can even find one in a salvage yard for not too much money.

The light from the factory is purely worthless as for actually being able to see what you are doing in there. As for the reel cord, you still have to hold it, and my mag-lite is way brighter. I'll be exploring some cheap upgrades for this... .

I have one of those 500,000 CP hand held jobs with battery clamps on the wires. You can usually find somewhere to lay it so that you can see what youre working on. Just dont put it too close to wiring too long. #ad

It may be a bit overkill, but you could dam for sure see what youre looking at.
As a side benefit, if it's raining out when youre under the hood, you can also dry your cloths, or toast weenies. #ad

I miss it.

Sure wouldn't take much work to put whatever type of light you like on a magnetic base connected to one of those reels. I have one of the lights like patriot Eric was speaking of,mine plugs into the lighter with a 25' cord, never have used it in five years on my truck, only others. Lets face it our Cummins don't break down much, not a whole lot of need for a underhood light.

I purchased a GM reel type underhood light JUST after they became available on newer (then) GM trucks. Mine, as well as every reel type GM light I've seen has a magnetic base. As long as you don't have a Tupperware car (i. e. , Corvette) the magnet is a real asset.

I find myself tinkering under the hood not for the purpose of repairing anything, just to check stuff and look at the engine from time to time #ad
. I ended up just unhooking the wiring connector so the plug is not making contact, thus no light to drain battery. Like the other reply said,It's a cummins and we won't be repairing it very often!

I guess I never realized GM's reel light had a magnetic base. I'll have to look into that, no big hurry. As a couple of you already stated, It's not like I'm on the side of the road fixing my truck, usually others.
