On my '97 4x4 I just changed my front tires. The front drivers tire was wore uneven. The inside of the tire was wore right down with some slight cupping. My passenger side tire was wore more on the inside but not as much. The cupping was worse on it. My brothers '01 has similar though not identical troubles. We have similar milage and both have replaced our front shocks. How does a guy check ball joint? If I remember correctly up and down is ok but side to side movement means its time to change them.
I would bet your balljoints are bad. If you jack up the tire, you should not be able to move it. push and pull on the top or bottom to see if there is any play.
