After my inital 1k brake in period I made a 1800 mile trip, from CO to MO and back, on mostly interstate. I was pulling a 20 foot gooseneck with a Jeep Wrangler on it for the trip there. Once I arrived and droped off the trailer and Jeep I noticed a strange vibration and sound comming from the transmission.

The sound was most evident when going about 10-20 in the lower gears. It sounds as if there was something loose that would vibrate, but not necissarily in harmony with the RPM's.

Did I mess my transmission up by going on such a long trip too early? Could it have been from using the J-Brake too early with a load? It has me  because I babyed the thing from day one until after I reached a calm 1000 miles or so.

Has anyone else had any similar 6spd problems w/ possible solutions?

Thanks in advance,

David

What you might be hearing is gear lash. Once the transmission got loosend up or broken in, all the parts inside will have a looser tollerance and you can get a noise from the transmission/gears in the lower RPM range.

I'm sure you didn't do anythign to harm it. There is no break-in required for the transmission. Which do you have, the NV5600 or the G56?

Put just over 1200 miles on mine and then took the 13K fifth wheel out on its first trip with the new truck. Haven't had any of the problems you are describing, but I don't think you did anything wrong by towing after 1K. Do you have the G-56 or the NV5600?

If it bothers you, take it in to the dealer (if you have one with a good shop) and ask them to look at it... ;)

I wish I could make a recording of mine for you all to hear. I believe it's coming from the t-case and man is it loud. Same sound I got from my '01, but it's a whole lot easier to hear in this one. It's one of those sounds that I believe to be normal, but I won't know for sure until it goes KABLEWEY. The t-case on my '01 went bye-bye at 129k, hopefully this ain't a recurring problem.

I guess what I'm saying is these trucks do make some noise. Just exactly how much is acceptable/normal I wish I knew.

Have you gotten under the rig and grabbed ahold of the driveshaft and checked the u-joints, carrier bearing? Sounds like a ujoint not happy.

I have an NV5600 and it growls at low rpm in lower gears all the time. No biggie, it's normal. These trannies have huge gear sets, and they're bound to talk a little bit.

Especially noticeable below 1500 rpm. I just don't make a habit of cruising around at those low rpms.

Sorry for the delay in response. As always the helpfull info is much appreciated. I am not sure exactly what transmission I have G56 or NV. I do know it is the HD setup. Good to hear that it is probably not serious, checking the u-joints sound like a place to start. Is there an easily spottible difference to tell what transmission it is? Thanks again.

If reverse is down and to the left, you have the G-56. If up and to the right, you have the NV5600... :D

Up and to the right on the NV 5600? Don't you mean down and to the right? I've driven an NV 5600 truck and I can't remember.

Dunno about you guys, but reverse SHOULD be down and to the left... Dodge trucks are just wrong... I'm glad I don't back up that much, I can never get used to reverse being in the,"Wrong" place when I have three stick shift trucks.

Yep , its a bit awkward at first but its not too bad.

Takes a little getting used to and if thats the only draw back to a NV 5600 I'll take it. Afer dealing with the previous 47re i had the wrong spot isn't a problem for me.

Aside from the shift pattern, the 5600 is cast iron, as opposed to Aluminum, and it has a nice "NVG" symbol on the side of the case.

As far as the growling, I get it too. I find it most noticeable in 4th gear when below 1500 rpm. It will do it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd as well. The biggest factor is engine rpm. Below 1500rpm (or so) the engine vibrations make the gears growl. This seems to be quite normal. To avoid the the growling I just drive in a lower gear and keep the engine rpm up around 1800 or so. This eliminates the growling as well as gives me better throttle response and allows for more efficient use of the exhaust brake.

My grandmother used to cook with "cast iron" pots and pans so that must be good... :D :D

I like my NV5600 Oo.

What were we talking about... I forgot... But I like aluminum... :D

I have the NV according to R being up and to the right. FORMULA hit the nail on the head with the description of his similar noise, thanks. Its good to know it is common and not a serious problem. With 7k on the clock I am leary of anything that may make her unhappy (the truck). :)
