I had a friend check with his dealership last night to see what they know about this recall. As of sometime last week, Star told this particular dealership to STOP installing this recall software. The Star rep admitted to the service advisor that they have had over 1,500 cases of the PCM burning out during the reprogramming process. There goes an $800 part. This dealership said they would be willing to install the old software, but I run the risk of the computer getting fried in the process. That would not be covered under warranty because it would be unauthorized. Star also told them that DCX has received a HUGE backlash from owners of vehicles that have had this recall performed for exactly the reasons stated in this thread. Once again, DCX follows the $$$ and screws the customer in the end and still never fixed the problem. So, now we will just have trucks rolling down hills with lights flashing and horns blowing. So, how does DCX think this would look in a lawsuit after that truck hits a school bus? Well your honor, we didn't actually fix the problem. We just made the lights flash and the horn blow. Yeah, their Risk Management team is brilliant.

?why would it fry the pcm?The pcm is not involved in this recall

As I understand it, this recall involves reprogramming the computer with a completely new software revision. Maybe PCM is the wrong terminology. But, whichever computer they are reformatting, many of them are being destroyed for some reason. This was the reason Star gave for not doing the recall when the dealership contacted them about frying a computer while installing this software.

As I have stated earlier it is the fcm and mic that get reprogramed. I have done many of these with no failures. My question would have to be #1 are their DRB's at the correct software version?#2 are they using bad cables, and #3 Are they following the correct procedure?

If a large # of controllers were failing there would be notification to all dealers to stop... ... ... This has not happened,at least not yet.

They should have never been ordered to start installing them in the first place. Recalls are meant to FIX problems, not transfer liability away from the manufacturer. I still can't believe the NHTSA agreed to this crap. I certainly hope your service writer is advising your customers of what this recall actually does before just forcing them to accept the recall...

I am on a first name basis with most of our customers... ... ... the others the writer will discuss with first.
