I am getting a noise that sounds like it is coming from the right front of my truck. If I pull the transfer case shifter towards 4wd or push it towards neutral the sound goes away. It does not seem to make any difference if I am cornering or not. The sound will completely disappear until I hit a small bump in the road like a reflector dot and that will get it going again. It is accompanied by a vibration that is felt very slightly in the steering wheel and the floor. I already replaced the ujoints on the rear axle and the carrier bearing. I pulled the front right wheel and the caliper and spun the wheel and I can hear a slight ticking noise from the hub. I had my heads right next to the axle stub and it didn't sound like that ujoint. It all makes me think that the unit bearing is bad but I can't get any wobble out of it with the truck jacked up. Has anyone seen anything like these symptoms? Sorry for the long post but this is a real head scratcher!

Yes it could be the unit bearing, but when mine have failed, I noticed the "poor" steering and the tires leaning in at the top. When I heard the "popping" noise, they were shot. I usually get about 75k to 100k out of a set (my truck has 425k on it) and is used off road daily.

I have never tried moving the transfer case shifter to see if the noise changes.

You said you replaced the rear U-joints, what about the fronts?

Could the transfer case linkage be rubbing / hitting something?

I am sure it is the vacuum diaghram in the CAD. The fork is not holding the collar away from the inner axle. I eliminated the CAD and installed the Posi-loc cable accuator. If is do work under the dash and accidentally hit the cable a little it will do the same rattle as when my diaghram was going bad. I would also look at the vaccum lines and connections to the CAD diaghram. I could not be more positive that is your problem. Easy and cheap fix. Oo. Good luck.
