2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Unit bearing removal 98.5 2500 4wd

Is there a puller or something else to remove the unit bearings intact from the front axle? I had to replace some broken wheel studs and to do that one must pull the whole assembly off. The bearing wouldn't come off intact and I ended up buying a entire bearing assembly for $400, just to R&R some studs.

Were did you get that bearing from? Seems a bit pricey... I recall them being around $280-300 last I checked.



Oh... is Maine Yankee still running? I visited Wiscasset when I was in the 6th grade, 1994. (Grew up in Van Buren, ME)

No, yankee is shut down. Bearing came from NAPA. I have 4 wheel ABS so that likely has something to do with it.

Thanks for the lead. I think I just may try and pop off the other one this winter to grease it. I never-siezed the new one. I had a large snap on bar puller that just pulled the outside half. Did you just press the 2 halfs back together? I wonder about doing that but was concerned about preload, the grease seal etc.

The way to get them off is to use a cold chisel and go around it a few times. Use a sledge, and put some arm into it. Has worked everytime, even ones caked with rust.

I use a large Snap-on slide hammer. When I split the one by accident, I just smeared some grease on it (after changing the rotor) and slid it together by hand. The axle nut draws the two halfs together. That lasted a year short of what the new rotor lasted before it rusted into 2 pieces.
