COMPLIMENTARY OIL ANALYSIS

Why I've chosen Banks

I suspect this is another "Dealer intelligence" issue. Mine is toast at 24K. I spoke with Randy's ring & Pinion to see what my options were- these guys are very much in the loop. Seems Ford and Dodge had a run of mismachined carriers which cause the clutch packs to toast prematurely (off center or more importantly, out of parrallel and or flat surfaces could easily toast the clutches. My first call to the dealer was greeted with the Skepticism of my ability to diagnose my vehicle. A few days later, the tech called me at my office to reschedule, we talked and he was familiar with issue and needed to order all the parts. He assured me he would build it tight and build it right and that he's already done a few under warranty. I've driven a lot of hi-mile clutch posi's over the years and regardless of what any spec may say, they should pull you off a Jackstand and certainly drive the dry wheel with one on ice. If yours does not work keep pressing til you find a dealer who will support you. PS- Tractech (Detroit locker people) has released a new version of their truetrac (very strong geared limited slip) which has an electrically activated locker. They may not make them for the big Dana's yet but I'm sure they will.

1st they told me the tech said he didn't think mine was an LSD. (Gee, if it wasn't, why did he add the friction modifier when they had it in last time. ) They told me they were going to check the VIN. I told them to check the glovebox sticker for option DSA instead, cause I knew it was listed there, besides according to the service manual the VIN doesn't contain any codes for the rear end.
After they figured out it was LSD, the tech suddenly remembered putting in the additive before. (ROFLMAO He must have some memory, because it was a different tech. ) The service manual also doesn't show a way to differentiate between model 248, 267, and 286 axles, so I wonder if he knew how much additive to put in. My guess is that he dumped in a whole conainer, however much that is. I'm also guessing that the 286 is the Dana 80, but I wasn't about to ask those geniuses. If anybody has the real answer, let me know. #ad

After all this I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER, guess how they tested it? Yup, rev'd her up and dumped the clutch. Said they did it 2 or 3 times and both wheels turned. #ad

Huh? What about that procedure in the service manual? Maybe there weren't enough pictures for those guys to figure it out. #ad

I brought it home and jacked it up and torqued it out per the manual. My wrench only goes to 150 and it just started to break loose, so technically I'm "within specifications" of 30-200ft. lbs. (Kinda whimpy for the Cummins don't you think?). #ad

I'm going to change the lube myself and leave out the modifier. I can live with a little chatter, but I can't stand getting stuck in my own driveway cause one wheel is on ice. #ad

Another satisified DC customer? Not here. Wait till that gal that does there quality survey calls me again. #ad

The good news is that they got the turn signal lenses on right this time. Part "A" goes into slot "B". What a concept!!! #ad

Oops, too late. What silencer ring? (More fun than my 98 SST)

The LSD on my 96 is the best one I have had. It works perfectly to me. I have been in situations where one wheel is on mud and the other on dry dirt and truck just goes. My old 85 Ford F250 with LSD would have to get one wheel spinning pretty fast before the other wheel would start to turn. On my Dodge the wheel with no traction will go about two revolutions and the other side will grab. I have observed this with my wife driving and I'm standing on the outside. It doesn't chatter and just plain works perfectly. I hope this is the way almost all of them work and those with problems are the rare exception and not the rule. If mine is the exception then it scares me as I hope to get another CTD Ram this year.

Has anyone tried changing the oil in the fall about the time the roads get slick and adding a small amount of friction modifier. Then in the spring, just adding some more modifier for the drier weather?

RKohn - Don't leave out the modifier if it chatters, you'll grind away the clutches and you'll have zero LS with lots of metal floating in your lube... Add it in increments until the chatter stops.

scrambled , yes the POWER LOCK is an excellent unit , to bad we are saddled with the TRACK LOCK , knock of of an auburn style posi , piece of junk , they are rebuildable , unlike the auburn style units but don't work near as well .
i went in for this same problem on my 2000 , i have 3 wheels in 2 feet of snow and one on dry pavement , i had to put it on 4wd to get out ... really got me mad , but they gave me the ... oh thats normal ... why is everything that is wrong with these trucks normal ???

Just speculation on my part about the LSD, but my buddy had a 94 with LSD and now owns a 99. He claims the 94 actually worked, and said in his mind it was not worth it on the new ones if they worked (or didn't work as the case may be) like his 99. It appears to me that most of the reports of the weak LSD are in the newer trucks. My guess is that Dana has done something different to the new ones. Only my guess, but that is the conclusion I have come to. BTW, I did not order the LSD in my 2001, as some have posted, if it only works when you don't want it to, why bother?

You are correct the Trac-Lok is a POS always has been always will be. I thought we had Pwr-Loks, that sucks.

Anyway The 95 worked no BS. The 99 doesn't. Bet DC sourced a cheaper something, or Dana did, or the machine work is whacked.

I tested mine again last night. One rear on solid ice, the other on dry pavement and the front wheels chocked. BOTH rears spun, the one on the ice did not make a full turn before the other started turning. MY LSD WORKS, and is a 99. I have very slight chatter in tight turns under power. There is something wrong with the ones that don't work like they are supposed to. My buddy has a 2K and his works too. Take it back until they fix it right.

Great post guys. Lots of information. My truck will kick sideways while turning under heavy throttle, be it on ice, wet roads or even dry roads sometimes. I am going to try the one tire on ice, the other on dry road test. BTW, mine is an '01.

Scrmbld - it seems some of us have Powr Loks and some have Trac loks. My best friends 97 has a Powr Lok and so does my 98. 5 - others I've seen have been Trac Loks.
