Unloading friends Home oil tank

I have a buddy who switched from Home Heating Oil to Natural gas and he has about 200 gallons of oil which he's willing to give away.



Now, I've read as much as I can, but was hoping for a decision answer here:



1. Should I snag his oil and use it in my 12v diesel?

2. If so, should I add anything to it?

I am not well educated about heating oil and how it compares to #2 diesel, but I have burnt about anything short of corn cobs and coal in the old '92. My biggest concern would be if there is any dye in it that could be a problem if your fuel is dipped/checked. If it looks like #2 diesel, RUN IT! If it has a different color, there is a risk and you will have to make the call.



Personally, if I had it to run, I would add it to #2 rather than fill the tank with it. I add filtered engine drain oil to my fuel evey fill-up. I would probably add some oil to it, but that is MY opinion.



Hope it works out for you to get some free fuel! Would be welcome with rising fuel prices!

Heating oil is #1 diesel. Go for it, just run a DFA of your choice and all is well. You might notice a slight loss in power and fuel mileage but with the fuel being free, oh well. Just remember that if you get dipped it is a 1000 dollar fine so you need to decide if it is worth the risk.

What are the odds of getting stopped and dipped? I've only read about it here but never actually heard anything like that. Sounds like something I'd expect to happen to big rigs and such, not a 3/4 ton truck.

They are mainly after commercial vehicles. In "my" area the chances are nill. I can't say what Boston is like.

When draining the tank I would keep the suction hose a few inches from the bottom of the tank. Over the years oil tanks tend to get a sediment build up on the bottom. High Sulfer diesel and home heating oil is the same product. It is #2 and its just as clean and refined as on highway diesel. Other than getting caught by the "tax man" your truck wont notice the difference.

home heating oil is # 2 diesel just dyed red . i drove a oil tanker for a while and the fuel is the same. just don't get caught with it in your tank but a pickup up or a vw rabbit wouldn't be a prime target of a fuel inspection by the dot like thebig trucks are etc. . so i'd go for it

the good old #2 heating oil is better for your truck than moder #2 road fuel. The fuel will burn more powerful and the higher sulfer amounts will cause less wear on your valve train and injector pump. The only down side, depending on the age of the fuek, it might be red, and it will cause more smoke to come out of the smoke stack in the back. Oo. Oo.
