So you barrowed your friends meter to test the arro @ 85Db inside the cab and you measured the Don @ 75DB. I know you bought your own meter, but to keep the test fair did you measure the might inside the cab with your friends meter?

I even compared our 2 radioshcks meters (RS33-2066 digital readout) and they are within 1 dB max of each other, identical actually in the 70-75 range.

So, what the DB reading inside the cab on the might?

The combined in cab noise (wind+cummins+exhaust) at full throttle uphill lets say at 70 mph will not exceed 72 dBA, unless you're driving next to someone and the noise reflects back at you. I must add though that my cab has a good undercoating and noise liners in the doors. The coasting (no throttle) noise at 70 mph is about 68-69 dBA, cruise is 69-70dBA.

Betterthanstock,

Thanks for the PM. I will think it over.

Nice to see mods not based on cow magnets/'air straighteners' or over pressurizing the fuel system.

I am interested in trying the sensor since I am running the EZ pressure box. I will take a little more torque... ... I am running 4. 10 gears tho.

On the FAQ page of http://rokktech.com is a whole range of db readings.

Thats 53DB on the might, for all you TDR Members.

That's a huge differance, I wonder what the Stock one put out?

Thumbs up on your R&D. I'll have to save up for this one.

welcome betterthanstock!-hey i did not see it ,but i have a loud 5" bully dog (catless)do you make them?im waiting for a resonator(nelson) from rip's in oregon?ill be the first to try it w/ a 5"system&tell you measured results!

thanks---LA

BetterThanStock,

If you could put a sound clip on your website

they are there

-the starting clip is actually inside garage, tailpipe is kinda far away ,makes it sound like a second gen.

-the drive-by clip is a little distorted right at 3 seconds as it comes directly facing the mike

-the inside clip: i did't realize how loud my throttle clicks when i change gears fast, also the third click is the power-locks

BetterThanStock,

Thank you!

I like what I hear. Sounds more like a diesel than stock, not loud and has a low 'burble' like a big block gasser. Nice. I like the inside the cab sound. I take it from the 'clicks' from shifting that the volume of the clip is pretty high and the exhaust sound is quiet.

This is a big help in thinking about this product.

You can achieve effect by removing the timing tone wheel (behind the lower engine pulley) and enlarging the holes. This way, when you put the tone wheel back on, you can rotate it from stock position (advance timing). You can draw the hole pattern out on ACAD and decided how many degrees each size change in drill bits will achieve.

On a side note, this is a static timing change. Going too far will make the engine noisy. Playing around with this concept, we really did not see a huge change in MPG.

Installation Question for '05

betterthanstock said:
For a 2004. 5 and 2005-on, you need:

-one Silent Might muffler

-one resonated tip (optional)

So what you are saying is that your muffler is a direct replacement for the '05 muffler. Any cutting/fabricating required to make it fit other than removing the OE muffler?

Bugracing, you revived the old thread?

It's a round straight thru like the picture shows, not offset, and longer. You should take it to the muffler shop and have them cut right ahead of bend over axle, and weld it on, and it needs hangers welded on. Comes with instructions. Usually they charge about $60 to install one. Nobody really wants to remove the factory crimped flanges on your original, so cut it off and weld it on.

Maybe I need to read more, but was wondering how bad this would sound with just the SM muffler in place of the stock on an '03.

Would it be as loud as one of the 'performance' mufflers only? I would like to get rid of the stock muff. and replace it with something, but I don't want to have to buy 2 different things to get it right (noisy perf. muff. + SM Muff).

That would defeat the purpose of searching for a new muff. Buying it and then haveing to add something else.

If I could just buy one thing (SM muff?) and get less back pressure and more MPG at a marginal increase in noise, that would be the thing for me.

Thanks!

At idle and low RPM it would be fine, but that real long pipe to the engine has a natural resonance at about 2300 RPM that is just annoying. You don't hear it with the stock muffler because all that restriction raises exhaust temperature which raises that resonance RPM even higher. If you are worried about putting on two mufflers and bringing the stock restriction back, that's not even close to reality. Here's a cheap small 4 inch strait-thru muffler that you can buy for about $40 and place in front of the SM (no relation to this retailer or manufacturer)

You place this about 2 ft in front of the SM, and you're good to go.

Verrry interesting! I'll have to give this some thought and see how the $$$ work out in the next couple of weeks. .

Thanks!

Cummins part number?

betterthanstock said:
the sensor is available from cummins for 25$ any guess on how much at dodge? mileage incerase is about . 5 to 1 mpg depending on cetane, air temperature, and your right foot

Maybe its been asked here already but thread is too long to read, does anyone know the cummins part number for this goodie?

Thanks

betterthanstock: the link you posted was to Jeg's in general, not a specific muffler. Which one in Jeg's are you referring to?
