I posted the Fleetguard, Donaldson, Balwin and NAPA numbers. The Donaldson has the highest cfm #'s. I have had one on my truck for 25k+ miles and will be replacing it in a week or two when I do my 50k service. It has been through rain, snow, sleet and lots of sand. I take it off every oil change and tap it on the ground to get the sand, bugs, cigarrette butts and potato chip bags off/out of it. It probably does not need changing but it is not nice and white any more, it's grey. The Donaldson filters are about $40, the marine version is about $85 ( has internal wire mesh to prevent it sucking in the element if it takes a big slug of water ). I'll see if I have time to do a search on RFBAF.



The filters with the molded plastic can have about 30% less cfm as the opening between the element and the can restricts air flow.



See you local Donaldson,Balwin and NAPA disributors for their product catalouges and compare. What/which is best for your application.



I have had no problem with the plastic nuts on the oem studs. I will be making a mount/deflector for looks not because I have had any problems with heat from the turbo or water spray. I have not forded and black gumbo crosings but the adobe mud that I have collected came right out when dry, then washed with a hose.



EDIT: 7-24 Puff bought the only NAPA in town. Cummins does not stock em and wasn't eager to get one.

Donaldson doesn't stock em but called warehouse in Denver, The RMTDR guys bought, 7-24, the 3 they had in stock.

Ended up with a Balwin from Sandia Fleet.

i ended up with the NAPA version. put some rubber vacuum caps on the studs. put the "suckersock" on https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayimage.php?&photoid=551&width=1

with an otherwise stock truck, even the NAPA BHAF should flow enough for it. almost 5 K miles, and the sock still looks clean.....

Hi all,



I have a friend who can build those mallory mounts out of polished stainles steel. We used the blue print that mallory gave out. However the cost to have him set up the laser cuter to do just one was more than I could afford. If it was ok with mallory we could try to get enough TDR members to buy them to bring the cost down. If we had a order for 50 we could maybe get them done around $50. 00 each. They would be nice fully polished edges and all.

i will be wanting one, BUT IT HAS TO BE OK'D BY BRIAN MALLORY TO USE HIS DESIGN..... i wouldn't want to hurt brian..... perhaps there should be a "royalty"built in to the price, to send brian mallory, to compensate hime for the design??? i have the "blueprint", and planned to make one someday, and i had planned to use stainless. this would save me a lot of time and trouble... ...

I've got a buddy who does waterjet work for me all the time. I'll get quotes for qty's of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25. $50 sounds a bit much for a qty of 50 but I'm clueless on the price of stainless- most of my fab work is plain steel and alum.

I called my friend with the laser cuter. He said we maybe able to produce them for less. It will depend on the thickness wanted. My wifes father owns a High performace airplane shop and has all his stuff cut with a laser. Mainly stainless because it is to hard to produce the same type of precision with any othe means of cutting. The edges are smothe to the touch when done. All the holes will be laser cut as well. What thickness would you all like to have. The water cutting may work just as good, but keep in mind it is real hard to grind and polish the edges.

Thoughts on a new mounting shield

My plans have always been to install a shield that would seal with the top of the hood, the firewall and the fender behind the battery. The new K&N setup "almost" does this.



Since you guys are talking about using equiptment with the ability to turn out quality, mass produced mounts, how about it.



The mount could be trimed with door gasket type rubber to seal at the contact points , then open the stock fender fresh air opening, or cut a hole in the cowl for fresh air, along the lines of the Scotty system to ensure adaquate fresh air.



I'd buy one in a heart beat.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too fast guys- from what I've seen /read what you are dreaming of may not be possible. Theres a bunch of notches in this thing to fit around AC plumbing, people write of the BHAF touching the hood now etc. all of these notches are fitting around things that likely have tolerances all over the place. What that means is lots of "weatherstripping" type measures. I'm not saying it can't be done but you could end up with a lot of custom work on each piece to get the desired effect and "weatherstripping measures" can look pretty tacky.



It may be more attainable to take this approach with MHAF- anybody know the flow specs for that filter- it's kind of taken a back seat.



Besides all that- I thought I'd read a thread where one of our brothers did some testing with simple pyrometers and determined that the air temp at the BHAF was only 2-3 degrres F hotter than air temp once you had a road speed of 45 mph or better. If my memory is correct- wouldn't that be pee in the proverbial pond?

Feel free to use that design, might cost you a beer if we ever meet though. I thought about sealing the mount against the hood but the gap near the a/c lines is going to be hard to seal so I left it at that. Stainless would be nice but it is harder to work with and cost is much higher than aluminum. If you can find a source for some thin insulation sticky on one side and shiny on the other(heat reflection) it works realy well to keep the mount cool. I had some left over from an aircraft installation but the cost is outrageous. To be honest one of the reasons I quit making them besides a sore back was that I was not making crap and with the labor I was making less than crap. Material, boxes, and shipping really add up. Good luck, it will be tough to make on 50 bucks with stainless. brian mallory

I have lots of different types of weather/heat seal aviailble to me we use lots of it in the hanger. I have changed it a little, to try to make it seal beter. I am having to proto type made. We will see how they look. That is if I can afford it after he give me the price. I have not seen the new k&n set up, does anyone know how much it costs.

Beware, stopsign material is hardened aluminum. It breaks when you make the 95 degree bend. Oh well, that's why you know someone that welds aluminum.

Picked up a BHAF today. Have not installed it yet. Was wondering in the link to Chuck Mallorys heat shield setup, if the filter lays against the old filter box retaining nuts? Seems like these might damage the filter over time.

Can anyone measure up and post the dimensions of the BHAF? I want to see if I have room for one before going to the trouble of buying something that won't fit. I have a little more room than you guys and I want to make a stainless cowl pressure fed canister simmilar to the Psycotty.
