Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Update on 2414HD snap ring/seal replacement?

I have done several searches and most all of the post I am finding are from 2003/2004 era. Has there been any update on this for a tool to replace the tailhousing w/ring other than the dealer $110 tool?



1. Has tool been found to make/buy to replace housing?

2. Has anyone found replacement bearing?

3. Are aftermarket output seal and tailhousing gasket available aftermarket?

4. How to remove bearing when you get housing off.



Mine is leaking at tailhousing gasket and at output seal. HELP



Looks like PO had some work done on it before and they gooped sealant on it instead or replacing gasket. I also think he had the rear yoke replaced.



Also , exactly where is the vent plug on top? I want to check it also to make sure it is not clogged.

Man, I cannot believe not one reply. I know there have been many of these replaced.

I rebuilt one, had no special tools. Put the tailhousing back on with silicone, no gasket. Not totally sure what you're asking but this is my experience.

The vent is on top, couple inches from the vacuum plug. It has a rubber hose on it with a spring type hose clamp, usually green.

No snap ring to remove before sliding the tailhousing off? So if I drop the drive shaft and remove the 4 bolts on the TP housing it will come off? The PO used silicone and it is leaking.

There is a snap ring. It can be accessed through a rubber plug on the side of the tailhousing. But it did not require a special tool. I used a pair of pliers. I do remember it being a good time to get it slid back together and get the snap ring back in place, not sure I'd want to try it in the truck.

Silicone works well in places like that but you need to used the correct silicone and be sure both surfaces are clean and dry. If you don't clean it up then yes, it will leak.

Snap ring

The snap ring article you refer to is used as a thrust washer in the early 241 DLD transfer cases. Check out Quad 4X4 they had a upgrade kit. By the way this failure is quite noticeable as the transfer case attempts to engage 4 wheel drive on its own. Quite noisy if it happens. The axial motion of the output shaft is what causes the seal to fail. Not something you would miss I wouldn't think. Ken Irwin

So, if I wanted to just removed the rear transfer case tail housing to replace the yoke seal and the tailpiece gasket I would not have to mess with the snap ring?



Didn't I read somewere that the bearing in the tailpiece housing kept the yoke from wobbling and if the yoke seal was leaking the bearing should be replaced also?

I recommend Permatex Ultra black. Ultra black (not regular black) is high temp and oil resistant as well as a host of other characteristics.

The one I had apart was a DLD (unsure of the differences) and I did have to remove the snap ring to get the tailhousing off.
