Fuel pressure

well it has been a while since some of us replaced the lift pumps with after market pumps, so i thought that would be a good idea to check how we are doing. i had put a used Bosch pump from a gasser 420 SEL mercedes and now it has been about 8500 miles since i got it on, so far no problems and originally i had it set for 14 PSI but i felt that it was rather high given the fact that VP-44 has a pump inside it so have lowered it to 10-11 PSI and at WOT it does come down to 7-8 but recovers real quick. also i have a screen filter before the pump and an oil filter (pf-2) that has the regulater on it and is used as a pre-filter to the stock diesel filter my pressure guage is hooked up post stock fuel filter.

so far so good :)

how is every body else doing ?

thanks

Good topic, I hope everyone with aftermarket pumps replies !!!

I'm on my second Mallory 4150, first lasted all of 5 months (about 6,000 miles). The second pump is running strong (4,000 miles), have it set at 14 psi's at idle (when warm), can't drag it lower than 5-6 psi's at WOT, no matter what I do. Also recovers very quickly from the initial drain when starting a WOT run and is usually running at 8-9 psi's, once I am into the WOT run. I also have a pre-filter (Earls, screen type) before the Mallory. Not sure if it's necessary to run a pre-filter, but it seemed loke cheap insurance when the first one died due to cavitation from debris, according to the Mallory analysis. Only time will tell. My next pump will be one of the Aeromotive design, if this one fails again.

Who's next ?

Mine's going strong too!

My original BG 220HR is still going and shows no sign of letting up. I set it @ 14 psi and it pretty much stays there.

Scott, the filter that i have after the pump was more like something that i had to have as the pump that i am using is just a pump without any regulating device so i put the regulater on the filter from where after reaching desired pressure fuel comes back to the inlet of the pump again, originally i had it routed to tank but then i changed it to present setup. i would like to have the filter before the pump but then i cant use it for regualting the pressure. the screen filter that i have before the pump, i can see some junk in it already so as you said it is cheap insurance to save the pump. the oil filter that i am using as diesel filter after the pump extends the life of the stock fuel filter and it is so cheap and easy to replace,i have cut open one filter and found the filter media to be just fine without any signs of disintegration of any kind at all. this filter setup i had bought from summit for transmission but then did not put it on and when i was designing the pump set up i found the right place for it :). it can extend the stock fuel filter change intrervals as it will keep most of the junk from going to stock filter. thoght should share what i have with other members.

Have had the pusher pump from Enterprise installed for a few thousand miles now. Prior to intall, pressure at idle was about 8 or 9 psi, down to zero at WOT in a hurry.

After installing the Enterprise pump which is a carter "oem style", pressure at idle is slightly over 15-16, never below 11 or so at WOT. The pump sounds strong, and truck has regained 1-2 #'s of boost.

I was concerned about the higher pressures at first, but Enterprise seems confident that there are no ill effects to be had - and I think they know their diesels. Very happy with this set so far. Time will tell.

I removed my (second) stock lift pump and installed the Summit G3134 at the fuel tank. It lasted 6 months, about 9000 miles and suddenly wouldn't pump. Rather than walk, I cycled the key, slid up under the truck and tapped it with a screw driver and away it went. I drove home alright but the pump was as dead as a hammer after I shut it off and tried to restart it.

I removed the Summit pump and my current setup is the second stock pump mounted on the frame rail back at the fuel tank. I was running a 20 micron prefilter ..... (and I am currently contemplating my next move. ) :( :(

Smokin Diesels Custom fuel system..

I now have 21# at idle and no lower than 14# at WOT. Comp box was set at level 2. This is one awesome system. I received 2 pumps (pusher and lift pump, Carter), Braided SS fuel line and AN fitttings from pusher pump to the VP44, 1 screen filter, relay and all wire w/connectors, awesome schematics and Andy put me together a custom braided SS fuel gauge line and AN fittings. Those banjo bolts have small holes. SOP feels like more power. Thanks Andy for a well thought out fuel system :D . Sam
