Just wanted to say hey, been busy last couple of days doing oil change, fuel filter, tire rotation, and installing my Christmas present; Mag-Hytec diff. cover. What a beautiful thing, now I guess that since its got a place for a temp. gauge that I'll have to get one:rolleyes: :D I wish that I had a picture for ya'll, it looks good from the back with the red rubber bull balls hanging in front of it.

No new developments on the headlight switch saga, except that the parking lights wouldn't come on last night. The headlights would though. Still need to get to the dealer with the numbers for the new parts.

Anyway the Gear Vendors is still NIB, awaiting install, it'll get in I just need a few snow (sick?) days. Can't wait to have a 9-speed. :D :D

Good to hear, and nice Christmas gift! I think that my headlight switch might be on the fritz with the weird stuff that has been going on at night, good thing the PIAA 910's are armed and standing by ha ha :)

Don't Give Up

Ya'll may remember my post a while back about the Dodge dealer having no clue as to where of what or anything else to do with the numbers that I gave (thanks to those who have done this before me) him for the upgraded headlight switch and towing harness. I wanted to drive my truck tonight since I gave it a bath and all today. However, since the parking lights, and dash lights were AWOL, it wasn't meant to be. Now to the point  Stopped by the SAME dealer, gave the numbers to a different gentleman, and he said, "Yep I have the switch, but will have to order the towing harness, it'll be here Friday no problem. " What a difference in people!

P. S. Truck looks great after the bath, now if I could only set aside an afternoon and evening to wax it:rolleyes:

I'll second that one! I talked with two different people at the parts counter at Lithia Dodge here in Anchorage regarding cab marker light housings. When I give the first guy the part number from the inside of the housing, and tell him what it's for, he says "jeez, I don't think I'll be able to look that up--the computer only goes back to '95. " About a week later when I called a second time, the second guy tells me "Oh sure, no problem. You need lenses and gaskets with the housings too?" He read me the total, and three days later I replaced the busted up housings with nice new housings and new gaskets.

I'm sure the dealerships are just like any other business--you get new people who haven't been trained yet and people who are just plain incompetent, interspersed with people who actually know their stuff.

Switch Fix

Finally got around to installing the new upgraded headlight switch, harness, and the trailer towing harness. What a project!, it wasn't that bad after all the swearing, and head scratching. ;) $175 later the lights work and I shouldn't have to worry about them. Just to let ya'll know the trailer towing harness actually was added on to the truck, meaning it didn't take the place of anything. I just simply plugs into some of the conectors at the tailights and a wire runs to the battery and trailer brake control. Maybe I ought to get some of those new bulbs for all of the dash lights. (Should of done that while I had it apart)

Just thought I'd let you guys know, now if I could only get that Gearvendors installed. I've been tripping over the box since before Christmas:)

VE Leak

Hey JTMcCraken, I can't think of the numbers off the top of my head, however I believe that they were 193, 194 and 184, but don't quote me on this. I think that if you do a search for "Dash Light Brightness" you will find the thread on this.

Now to my recent :{

Over the course of last night and today I put roughly 100 miles on my truck. I had been smelling a little fuel in the air, and this morning I noticed a small puddle under the motor. Its definatly fuel, and it seems to be coming from around the front of the pump where it is bolted onto the back of the gear cover. I'm not sure exactly where its coming from but I'm afraid that this leak may be leaking into the gear cover and into the 3 gallons of Amsoil that I just changed! Its bad enough that its leaking, but I don't want fuel contaminitation!

Power Wagon, Piers, Big Don, anyone that has had a similar problem, what is the solution? Maybe this is a calling to get my timing advanced also, though I didn't want to have to do it this way. Its probably just a seal (I hope) but I don't know. HELP, SOS

Thanks all,

Chris Hughes

leak

Mine leaked from where the throttle shaft went into the pump. I got mine rebuilt. There was a recent thread about a pump leaking, maybe that could help?

Bad News

Just got off the phone with a man from Scheid Diesel. He said that it its possible that fuel can enter the crankcase, so now I really know that I shouldn't drive it. I just changed my Amsoil 100 miles ago:mad: I'd like for Scheid to do the work on it, but I don't want to drive 3 hours.

Pump Options

I decided to today that I would take the pump off myself, was off work anyway, and I'm going to take it down to the Cummins dealer. I don't know why I didn't think of them yesterday.

Here is my recent head scratching question:confused: While they fix the leak, front seal I believe, (it was wet) should I have them go through the whole pump while its off? What can I lose but more BOMBing funds?

While the truck is down, and the weather is bad, (raining?) I'll have a little time to start on the GV install.

All comments and words of expertise are both welcome and appreciated.

Gettin' Back Together

Got the pump back on Tuesday, had the shop go through it just to check into the insides. I decided that removing the pump isn't a weekend, or even week long project. ! (I wasn't in a hurry anyway. ) The shop said the the rollers or roll cage wasn't in the best of shape, so they replaced that. Total bill; $600:{

Started the install that afternoon, and just my luck, Dad and I lost the small key that goes on the pump drive gear.   The service manual specifically states that the front gear cover must be removed to remove the key. Took apart the truck even more, however it was easier to align the pump shaft and drive gear with the cover off. ;)

Can't wait to get the truck up and running again, however, in the mean time I've been working on the GV install. And what a project this has become:mad: These are by far the worst, hard to follow, non-specific, not even for my truck instructions that I've had to follow. A call to GV found out that the instructions for Furds is very similar to Dodges, I've got news for them:--)

However if the GV works as well as I'm hoping, I'll probably forget all of this.

So there is the skinny, a few more hours putting the motor together, getting some driveshafts made up and installed, and I'll be back on the road. :D

Sounds like quite the project. . Good on ya to take on the pump work yourself. . I'm always worried about screwin somthing up in the gear train.

Worry?

Hey Lil' Dog, don't worry you aren't the only one worried about this project:eek:, but seriously I believe that Dad and I will get not only the motor running but the GV also. Found out today that driveshafts will run me about $300, for the both. Can't stand my Cummins broke down. :( Tommorow night I'll probably have the motor reassembled.

What do ya'll think, should I change the enging oil since it was possible that fuel contaminated it? I just changed the Amsoil and it isn't cheap$$$, and it the oil level hasn't raised. Since there was such a constant stream of fuel running doum the outside of the block I think that it stayed out of the crankcase. However, an oil change is cheaper than a new Cummins:rolleyes:

Keep your fingers crossed, someday soon my truck will be runnin' down the road better than it was:D :D

First Impressions

:D :D :D Got the truck running today. When I went to start it it cranked about two revolutions then quit, I guess that its time for a new battery. Hooked the charger up which was a good idea anyway in order to bleed all the air from the fuel system. Next hurdle,

:D :D :D Gearvendors works awesome!!! Even though it may have been a pain in the A$$ to get together, and quite pricy for the unit and 4 new u-joints and 2 driveshafts. But oh the joy of having 9 gear ratios. A gear for every situation, can't wait to get a trailer behind. And get this, 5th over gives me 70mph @~1700rpm. Down from 5th's 2200rpms. This shall improve fuel mileage. ;)

Felt good driving the Cummins today, reminded me of how much I would like to trade my 4-cyl Furd Ranger for a '92 or '93 W250 4x4 5sp (9sp) Cummins Ram!

Lovin' the new trans,

Chris Hughes
