I couldn't decide where to post this, either products/accessories or here, and here made more sense.

I've had this idea for a while... since our hybrid Dana 80 axle is only rated for a wimpy 7500 lbs, and especially since some of us like the big truck campers.

So, I had an idea... why not get the Dana 125 axle out of a Ford F550? It alone is rated for 13,000 lbs.

I figured I'd keep the 10-bolt hubs and brakes as they are and just adapt them to the Dodge brake lines. Then I'd go a step farther and adapt F550 front brakes and 10-bolt hubs to the front axle, and then get a set of Alcoa 10-bolt 19. 5" wheels (to replace my Rickson 8-bolt 19. 5's).

So... I'd get a much beefier rear axle, bigger brakes all the way around, and sharp wheels in the process. Downside is this is probably a $5k+ upgrade.

Assuming for the moment I was willing to spend the money, can anybody foresee any roadblocks with this idea?

I can think of one potential problem now... the F550's standard ratio is in the higher 4. x range (not 4. 10). I have 4. 10's now, so if there's a 4. 10 available for the Dana 125, I'd be set. That or have to swap the Dana 60 out to match the Dana 125.

I thought they used a Dana 135?

Sure is a nice rearend... Very stout, very BIG. Gearing would be the key, 3. 73's would be ideal. The square axle tubes are cool too!

It would be sweet, but I dont think you could use the fll potential of that rear. A 2 ton rear on a 1 ton frame=twisted frame if you try to load the rear to the limit.
