Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 53 block?

My truck has the stock HY-35 turbo. I am considering replacing it with a HTT HX-35/40 hybrid with a 12cm exhaust housing. I think it will spool a little slower, but I am primarily interested in more power while towing at around 2000 RPM or 65 mph with my 4. 10 diff ratio. Just wondering how that would perform now and in the future if I go to a set of moderate injectors of 50-75 HP. Comments/advice is very welcome and appreciated.

I have that turbo with edge EZ and stage 1 injectors. I notice 35-40 psi towing, stock feel spooling . Very well worth it if you need to keep the stock fit of the elbow as I did to keep the Jake E-Brake

I have the PDR version of that turbo and I went with the 14cm wastegated housing at the urging of a friend. I don't think the spool is even an issue. It is slower than the Hy35 I had stock but only in the very low end. My wastegate is set at 36psi. I have the 1. 6 sticks which are 90hp. The 12cm is probably fine but if you do go with bigger injectors you will appreciate the 14cm housing and will see it in cooler EGT at 2000 rpm under load. I decided on the 14 also because they are almost impossible to find used and the 12 is fairly abundant because guys go bigger not smaller, if you are buying one get the 14. You can always pick up a 12 to play with.

Is it a bolt in replacement? By that I mean are any mods required to fit it up properly or is it unbolt the old and bolt in the new? Also, what do you mean by keeping the stock fit of the elbow? Thanks!

What do your EGT's run under load and going up a steep grade? Right now, I have to pay close attention to EGT and use a lot of right foot control to keep EGT below 1200 when my camper is on the truck and headed up a grade.

It's a direct replacement with one possible exception. Some are fitted for the waste gate actuator to mount on the compressor housing & some 90 degrees clockwise with the actuator on it's own bracket like the one in the photo above.

Mine was a direct bolt-on install. I had the HY35 with my auto but for those of you that have a 6 speed you already have the HX35. The only issue for me was the turbo to exhaust flange bolts. I don't recall exactly which way they went but two of the studs are threaded into the turbo and the other two are bolts going through the exhaust manifold flange. Mine may be an odd one but I remember having to buy two nuts to go on the studs. I got them at the dealer and they must be something special because they were $3 each.

My PDR did come with the alternate wastegate bracket but I placed mine in the stock, under-turbo location.

As far as EGT goes I can't really say much, my old trailer only weighs around 3000 pounds so I'm not the one to ask. I can keep it around 1K going up anything with my Comp on 1 or 2. I would again suggest that if you are going to buy an exhaust housing new to get the 14. Once the truck is moving the difference in spool is nothing to worry about in my opinion. I am running the stock air filter and intake horn but those may be something you want to look at to get a bit more air although I don't know if any of the claims are all that impressive.

You said your wastegate is set at 36 psi, I assume it is adjustable? Do you have any problems with engine codes due to running higher boost than stock? Do you get much smoke with the 14 when at low RPM? I have to get the truck emission tested each year and I don't want to run afoul of the state DMV as far as emissions go. Anyhow, thanks for the information, have a great weekend.

I saw that in his signature, but I did know if it is adequate, apparentl it is. I have an edge comp also, so sounds like I should be OK.

Yes the Comp takes care of the boost fooling, never a code for that issue. My wastegate came pre-set from PDR but it is adjustable. It comes with a gauge attached that holds the rod in position while you install the actuator and is then removed. Because I bought the housing seperately I had to assemble and clock the turbo to fit, a very simple process.

With the Comp on 1 I get no smoke, but on 3 if I get on it I get just a slight haze from a stop but only for a moment, it clears very quickly. On 4 or 5 I can get all the smoke I would ever want.

So, if I bought it with a 12 sq. cm exhaust housing, how much trbl would it be to changeout to a 14? Also, any idea what the cost to change to a 14 would be?

Changing housings is pretty easy but it makes sense to get it with the 14. You can pick up a used 12 pretty easily as they were stock & people often ditch them for the 14. Chances are you will be happier with the 14 especially if you use the top end much. Frankly I didn't notice any decrease in spool upgrading to the 14.

Hy-35

I have the stock HY-35 on my auto 99 model yedterday I took the intake tube off and just doing routine maintanence when I grasped the compressor wheel shaft and it moved about 1/16" up and down. Is my comp wheel going to fly apart soon. I thought that these wheel shafts should have no side to side deflection. If I am just lucky and it needs bearings I want to upgrade to what ya'll have. Who is PDR? And is all I need is the intake housing assembly with the wheels shaft brg's.

The side play is only a problem when you start scuffing the housing. 1/16" isn't too bad. The HY uses an entirely different exhaust housing so that needs replacement. PDR Diesel Performance City Diesel DodgeZilla Turbo City Diesel - Diesel Performance

& HTT High Tech Turbo also have hybrid turbos.

thanks

Thank you darkhorse. I will check it. And when I was looking at it I did check for scuff marks and did not find any. Also I was doinf some digging on this and it appears that I may have an HX-35. I have a 99 auto 4x4. What do ya'll think. I also have the adrenaline with airdog 100 and K&N intake and 4" strait exhaust. What combo do you think I should use. Daily driver 90% and tow rig 10%.

Look at the second picture in post #3 of this string. That is what a HX35 will look like. Only 2000 or 2001 to 2002 had the HY35. SNOKING

time

Well I finally went out to my shop and looked. I have an HX-35. That's good, so I took the silencer out of it, oiled the filter and driving it. How can I find out what exhaust housing I have, because I have problems with egt's. Or should I just put some water meth or prop in the intake. Instead of spending that huge amount for that big intercooler.
