Hi, my power steering pump has started leaking now. I would like to upgrade to the newer one but what I don't understand is why you have to replace all the steering linkage etc. . ?? Doesn't the pump just hook up to the old hose's or are they all different including the steering box itself?

I did not have to replace any other linkage or hoses. It is pretty much turn key.

I have the 09 truck. . I recognize the white reservoir as what I have but I have a leaking steering box. . looks like it is coming from the top of the box. . is this a common problem?

Hey guys. I'm new here and I know this is an old post but I need some SERIOUS HELP!!!! I purchased my first dodge ever back last may and my first diesel ever and the only diesel in my opinion, a 2006 5.9 megacab 4x4! I love the engine and the power, starting to hate the truck! :( since may I have out FIVE "reman" pumps from OReilly on it and it just went out again! They are the snap ring backplate "old style"! I'm done with them! Going to a mopar OEM pump! I have spent over $1,500 just on the front end! All new moog tie rod ends and ball joints! And replaced the steering gearbox also but with the old style! Right front tire is kicked in at top and out at bottom wearing on inside! What do I do? Offset ball joints like some say (band-aid) or new axle tube( correct fix and permanent)? Do I need to upgrade to the new gearbox design and the new "T-style" dragline crossover steering assembly? So this brings me to my question. This new "upgraded" pump, is this what came factory on the '09 models or is this truly a different pump? My local dealer says this new upgraded pump according to his computer is supposed to replace the original '09 pump. Money is tight right now and if it is the same pump or I will get same performance I will get one from a salvage yard off an '09 model and at worst case buy the "upgraded" bracket to make it work? Or will the factory bracket off the 6.7 fit my 5.9? Truck is also pulling hard right? Assuming due to bent axle tube ears and tire running on inside edge. Truck has 5" rough country lift and 20x9" inch XD Hoss wheels and currently 33/12.50/20 toyo open country mt's and fixing to buy a new set of 37/13.50/20 nitto trail grapplers but gotta get front end fixed first! Could I have something wrong with my hydroboost causing the pumps to wear out too quick? Or is it just the pumps are cheap like I have read? Thanks so much guys! Gotta get my truck fixed but can't dump a bunch of money in it right now, the previous owner didn't take care of it like should have been!

To start with if money is tight do not go to bigger tires, they will just add more stress to the steering system. Replace the bent front housing. Truss the replacement to avoid tweaking

Last time I talked to him he ended up with all oem parts (unmodified) and has decided his truck will never steer like a sports car.

Bob, you are so correct. I'm still not done, I just can't afford to keep replacing parts for now....... Started a new job actually closer to where you are.

I have a Toyota Landcruiser too and discovered the IH8mud forum. Like I needed that.

JKosten- I did test the pump, it met factory specs, on the lower end.

After trying to modify the pump, hi pressure hose and trying 3 different boxes, I am back to all stock, the latest and greatest parts.. Ho hum....

Wish list: for now it is a steering box rebuild from Howe Performance Steering, mainly due to their offer to lighten up the steering effort with the rebuild. That would be nice.

I had upgraded the hi pressure hose before from 1/8 ID to 1/4 ID. Helped with the steering (less effort) but the hydoboost made funny noises occasionally. The topper was cavitating the steering pump just out of Fresno on the way up to Yosemite over New Years. It was okay until I hit the hills, turning right/left pulling the trailer and increasing the rpms. I think it was possible the increased flow resulted in bubbles in the reservoir, getting sucked into the pump. I had additional venting in the reservoir cap too. Back to stock hose... Love the truck, hate the steering. Common lament.
