I want to have a rear driveshaft made up with 1480 u-joints. It was recommended that I jump up to the 241 DHD transfer case. These have a larger output shaft. Are there any differences in these or are they all the same? Looking at car-parts.com website, it mentioned a 23 or 29 tooth gear. Does that have to do with the pto gear? Thanks.

T-cases for automatics have a 23-spline input and manual transmissions have 29 splines. Depending on what year your truck is, some t-cases have a speedo sender and some do not (later models get the signal from the rear axle). You may or may not run into shifter linkage issues, I don't know, but you should check into it.

I was researching the same thing. I'll go over my notes to confirm, but I believe the rear drive shaft will have to be shortened. A different rear yoke may also have to be used. I can't remember, but that should not be an issue since you want to go to 1480 u-joints anyways. The front will stay the same. The linkage should line up. If it doen't, just get the linkage to a 3500 since they came with nv241 DHDs. I decided to go with either a 271 or a 205 for strength. If strength is your main concern, it will add cost to your drive shaft, but I would replace the rear slip yoke with a fixed yoke. You will need a telescoping drive shaft though. Also go with a one piece (no carrier bearing) drive shaft.

I don't know what you are planning to do with your truck. I recommend you get a very good drive shaft. With the larger u-joints, you run the risk of twisting the shaft. It's much easier to swap out a u-joint (and maybe a yoke) on the trail than to find a shaft.

Let us know how it works out. Good luck.
