Upgrading injectors, can a dealer tell you've upgraded?

Another question I have is whether a dealer can see or tell if you have other than stock injectors. Will the increase in fuel delivery show up on the computer or send a code to the ECM?

Welcome to the TDR. I don't know if the dealer will be able to tell the difference if you install some 275 injectors, but he/she should be able to see marks on the bolts since they are clear coated.



If you're concerned about the dealer finding out, I'd keep the stock injectors and put on an Power Edge EZ box. Also, keep in mind the saying, "I am my own warranty station. "

the dealer will know as soon as they step on the go pedal ... maybe not like Charles says if you do 275's but bigger than that if the power dont clue them in the extra smoke will!

I read some where that cummin's scan tool could tell because of the differences in the fuel use compaired to the other info stored in the ecm or something like that but the dealer's scan tool's didnt read that info but with what they have been paying for lift pump replacements maybe they have updated the tools and are looking for more specific info???

its a gamble either way!

as far as the bolt thing unless they pull the valve cover they wouldnt know weather you pulled the valve cover to adjust the valves or exchange the injectors but if you had a problem depending on the dealer you have they might do just that!

you could keep the stock ones and throw them back in in case you had a problem?

All this is presuming they have a diesel tech that knows what they are doing, or has lots of experience with CTD's. On the same note, If they did'nt, I would only use that dealer for known warranty issues, or on things that I knew and could tell them "Replace this and this. " Keep the smart mechanics for diagnosis and Major problems.

They might notice the power,



Good things that could happen:

1. They don't notice



Bad things that could happen:

1. They void your warrantee

2. They replace those faulty leaking smoking injectors with brand new stock ones.

Best advice...

I can give is if you expect to use the warranty on the Cummins, don't try to fool the dealers. Don't make mods to the truck until the warranty goes out. If you do, expect to be your own warranty station, or do as I have and find a reputable diesel shop that works on our little Cummins and tell them of all the mods up front. Become a partner with them.



You can't get mad at a dealer when he figures out you are dupping him and expecting warranty work on a modified truck. Very few get real lucky and find a dealer that does not care about the mods you have and will warranty the work anyway. You won't find a dealer like that here, but some have elsewhere.



FYI... I have acutally heard of one dealer that did replace expensive aftermarket injectors with new stock ones because those injectors appeared bad. Honest pays.

I don't think most of us are looking to rip off the dealer or DM. I think the majority of us are cautious because we don't want to come in for something completely unrelated and have the dealer either void the warranty "just because", or blame the warranty work on the mods.



For example, I'm sure a dealer would blame my lift pump problems on me having an Edge EZ... those of us that are "in the know", know that the lift pump flows the same amount of fuel regardless of engine output... Whatever the engine doesn't use, is sent back to the tank... . IMHO, you would have to be putting out the power of a dragster for the injector pump to require more fuel flow than the lift pump is supposed to flow... I'm sure I'm probably wrong, but I know my little Edge EZ doesn't exceed the lift pumps flow.



BTW, I brought my truck in to have service because my driver's door was leaking when it rained and because I had a rattle in the dash I wanted to get taken care of before my 36k warranty expired... . I took my Edge EZ out just in case... Who knows, he may tell me that my "HUGE" power output is making the dash vibrate apart. ... not worth the risk to me... . but I can tell you this, if I had my clutch "abnormally" go out I sure as heck in good conscience wouldn't go back to the dealer and blame it on them and expect them to fix it... I would quietly give South Bend a call.

Ahhhhhhhh dealers... ..... mods... ... warranty.



Bottom line is it is the dealers discretion. It depends LARGELY on the dealer and the guy wrenching your truck. Just know that any modification will sit in the back of the hand, like an ace, and could be used against you if they so choose. This is why I know of a good number of guys who refuse to mod their truck until its out of warranty.



Hopefully the dealer is reasonable.
