Competition Diesel Innovations Powerstroke stuff

Well I've talked to all the big names.

Money hungries want me to 'rebuild' and invest (if you can call it that) in HD parts--billet shafts, more frictions, flex plates, billet servo, billet piston, solid 2nd gear strap, accumulator, etc.

I've been told straight up there isn't anything wrong with the 48RE. With only 30K miles it would be a waste to do a 'rebuild' with 2nd gear band, new/more direct and overdrive clutches, servo, piston, etc.

Suncoast told me: torque converter, valve body, laminated flex plate, and billet input shaft for the intended horse power. Sounds reasonable.

Other info I've 'heard', flexplate and input probably won't fail unless your gettin' crazy.

I'm convinced (unless YOU tell me otherwise), for this SIMPLE transmission, I'll live a happy life with a $500 TCS (same design as DTT--89, 91%, etc. ) converter, $450 valve body (raise line pressure to around 175 psi for holding power), a 3. 8 ratio shift lever (to lower apply pressure to 2nd band), and that's about it.

Toss in around $500 to remove and install at a local shop and I save about $3-4000 depending on what 'Top End' company you go with. That's enough dough to remove and install the transmission 6-8 times IF you ever had probs.

Well needless to say, with the small fortune I'm saving, I just ordered a HTB2 Turbo from HTT and STILL have change to put toward an SRT-10 hood!

By the way, talked to Dave at Goerend Bros. transmission and he is a very informative/nice guy. He offers a LIFETIME! warrantied triple disk configuration converter with billet cover for $1200! You can upgrade to a '1020' sled puller stator for $400 which GETS THE POWER TO THE GROUND! It's a tight converter very efficient from what I gather. Says it will start the truck moving in a power brake at about 1750 rpm's.

I would love to run this converter more that anything, but at three times the cost of a TCS-DTT it's not a viable option for me at this time. Hell, I work for my money and I still have gauges, wheels, tires flares, subs, bed liner, FASS, injectors, hood, lift, etc. to worry about.

Morale of the story: Just say no to Performance Chips of Utah, err, I mean transmission upgrades aren't the end of the world and you don't have to take out a second mortage to cover the job. Hell I'd do the job myself, but hate crawling around under a vehicle without a truck lift.

TCS appears to have good stuff, they di make DDT stuff at one time, I finder hard they selling the same 89% TC for 1/2 of DDT price. Are cutting down the stock stator of replacing with their own design?

Chris... . I have that sled pulling converter he is talking about. Mine stalls lower than that, but at 1750ish... it's only 50-75rpm off lock-up. It is a spendy converter... but in my opinion WELL worth the money.

Chris,

dont know if you live at high altitude or you venture up that way but dont get a real tight converter it will not let the turbo spool fast with no air and your truck will be a turd out of the hole for daily driving.

I noticed that my truck feels a little sluggish out of the hole with the new transmission. But once I the rpms get up to about 1700 it feels great all the way through the gears. Here in SLC the altitude is around 4500 ft... what is going to help me get my hole shot back?

Clayton,

What parts are you running on your auto?

I think to an extent, diffentent boxes will help alot more than others to remedy lag. When I put the bullydog downloader on, took care of ALL the '600' off the line lag issue. Touch, and go! I guess alot of fuel down low? On the contrary, not even the TST stacked with a pressure box did much good for the turbo lag off the line. My '600' behaves much differently than my '555'. With TST and pressure on '555', lockup means launch! More torque, but on the '600', need downloader, TST on 2x2, and pressure to slip the TC in overdrive and provide really 'touchy' throttle response on the freeway.

Anyway, I'm thinking even with a tight converter (1,750 'ish start from power brake) and a sled puller 66 HTT turbo at SLC's altitude I can maybe make it work with the right (enough) fuel? Maybe I need to reprogram the TST with the twins setting to bring the fuel in earlier to help with spool?

... ..... If not, guess I'll just have to turn, my big single into a big twin.

I have everything in the auto except for the aftermarket shafts. I didn't have the funds to do those. What works best for low boost fueling to give me a better hole shot?

On our 99, at 100,000 miles, the transmission was fine. We stuck in a Suncoast converter and vale body, and it has been working great for 65,000 miles, towing as fast as we should go.

But don't complain if you end up with a lot more power than you anticipated, and you fry it! ;)

Sorry Santa

Looks as though the fat man up north does'nt remember the digital photos somebody took of the recall screen on his X-Monitor (1875 degrees) and the filter that had'nt seen a cleaning kit in its life, nor the turbo's compressor housing with shavings in the inlet, oh and lets not forget the Powermax CR that was running on level 5 and up with a stock turbo and very poor maintenance at that. I also recall a certain Authorized Bosch Dealer that reinstalled 3 flow injectors in this truck and said that along with a Powermax CR box with stock components when driven hard would cause excessive cylinder heat that could cause nozzle failure on any injector. TDR readers, You know the nightmare customer you've all heard about? You've been reading his posts!! Facts still stand.

Light em' Up!

Hey Kringle, Who are you going to blame when your 3 boxes burn your sled down? Its not all about the stacking boys.

Robert what's up buddy? Took ya long enough to bring it back, but I knew you'd come sleezin' around. Fat man... . , that's not very nice. I'm a cut 185lb, unlike the stock 13" guns your slingin' from the torso, mine see the gym daily x 2.

Enough about me, this is about the shady character you call your soul.

My injectors failed twice before I even had the TST. Of course you remember, or maybe the delusions of the ego convinced the id--it's full of crap.

My truck's been running sweet ever since I stopped talking to you. Actually a blessing in disguise, so thank you.

In fact, now that I've stopped doing business with you, I'm saving money on parts and I have more maintainence free miles on the new truck than the old one you ruined. Zero problems, imagine that! Oh, I think I've also saved you a little money as well. I show all my buddies the 'good deal' websites, tell my story, that kind of thing.

Well it was good to hear from ya Robbie, don't be a stranger stranger!
