Well, today is the day. Off to pick up my new to me 2006 5. 9 CTD. I have spent all my time over in the 6. 7 forum. Looking forward to hanging out here now and learning more about my new work horse.

That said, any immediate advice of things I need to do right away? Anything like the old killer dowel pin I need to worry about on my 06? I have a list a mile long of things I want to do, but just looking for the "must do immediately. "

Thanks for the help!

Welcome!

I think most issues will be related to HVAC (broken vent doors), and such. There were some recalls on steering fixes, but I'm sure someone more versed on those issues will chime in.

What happened to the 07. 5 - was it in an accident or did you just get rid of it in favor of the 5. 9 due to problems?

My best advice is, leave it totally stock and it'll last longer and be trouble free. What transmission do you have?

Scooby, I sold my 6. 7 for a number of reasons, all of which I regretted after 8 months. However, I always wanted to have a 5. 9 to modify.

Grizzly, I have the 48RE.

The OEM injectors on my '06 lasted 230k miles while I owned it. I don't know how many more miles they lasted with the next owner.

My '06 was all original equipment. No magic black boxes, no magic add on filters, just Cummins and Dodge.

I went to the Cummins dealership in Sparks, Nv a few years & asked about better filtration... thinking along the line of a 7 or 2 micron filter. I was told at the time that I should stick with the 10 micron and anything else was not recommended. I don't know if Cummins has changed their positon since that time.

Keep the factory canister filter and add if you like. Remove for off road or competition use only. . check all wiring. . if something doesn't look correct investigate why.

Mr. Barlow has an excellent point and serves as a good control group. Instead of "KIS" standing for Keep it Simple... . you could say the key to longevity is "Keep it Stock"!

Here is a picture of my Glacier 2mic filter set-up. I have put in a primary fuel pressure sensor to monitor the filter life. It fit well, didn't block access to other items on the engine. I have only changed it once in 30,000mi

I stand corrected in that I wasn't paying careful enough attention to the Generation of engine that relates to fuel filtration. The advice given to me by Cummins was in reference to my Second Generation vehicle.

The current fuel filter in the 3rd gen 5. 9's is 7 micron, used to be 10, was changed with a TSB.

I'm with Harvey, keep it stock, plenty of power for me!

Can you please describe or better yet do you have a pic of where you mounted the fuel pressure gauge on the GDP set-up??

Personally, I think you're on the right track with the 5. 9. Make a copy of the buyers guide on the TDR home page - left hand column - and put it on your computer desk top for easy reference. That should answer most questions. If you're going to bomb the thing, be prepared for shorter engine life and expensive repairs.

It's pre-emission... except for the CAT... bomb the heck out of it and have fun. I don't have a lot of bad habits, but I do like to spend a little money on my truck. Have fun with it and learn as you go... but... . do it right the first time... know what kind of HP you are looking to end up with and get injectors and turbo's to work from the beginning. That way you don't waist a lot of money.

I bought my 06' last August from and elderly gentleman with 5,675 miles on it, I now have 40k plus, I did install a XX fuel filtration system at 10k miles which I'm very happy with and a old edge insight that I bought used for monitoring

I put 2 inches of foam in the drivers seat and I am done with this truck and loving it

Yes I too Have upgraded from a 6.7 to 5.9!!

Ya know that truck(6. 7) was OK but that pollution control just killed it. That malfunction indicator light was on and off all the time. The fuel economy just sucked royally! I found this 04. 5 with a few more k's on it than I like,(175,000KM) but I took a chance on it and so far ever thing is all right. However no matter who I talk to, they says that I need injectors cause its in the right mileage. We'll see.

The one thing that I can't figure out is that I decided to take the truck off road and as I was going up a steep grade(15%) the truck kept "surging" and started to heat up more than what I thought was comfortable(210F) Truck was empty.

Now I can take it to one those diesel performance places but my god they are a little pricey. Dealer?... no thanks! Any suggestions? I must say I changed the fuel filter and air filter. (this poor truck has little or no maintenance done to it)
