What is the best upgrade in transfer cases. I was looking for something thats fairly bolt up and go, but don't mind if I need to fab. I was thinking a 271, but I don't know what the advantages are. What do you all think. What do the sled pullers use.

I am happy with my 271 conversion. It was a very easy swap. . probably about as easy as the 241DLD to 241DHD swap.

I just had to put a slight indentation in the floor because my driveline torques so much it was vibrating the floor.

As far as what the sled pullers use. . Brad Ingram, Craig Severson, and others use the 241DHD without issue from what I've heard.

Its probably enough but I'm good at breaking stuff, so I figured I'd take a shot at breaking the 271 as it isn't done very often.

Like Dan said, you'll loose your speedo, and also the shift linkage will be a bit different on a 97.

NV241DLD: 94-02 2500 Automatic Diesels

Input Rating Continuous: 1028

Input Torque (Max ft-lb): 5555

GVW: 10,500

241DHD: 94-02 3500 Automatic Duallys and 2500 5 Speed Diesels

Input Rating Continuous: 1400

Input Torque (Max ft-lb): 5555

GVW: 11,000

271: All 3rd Gen Dodge Diesels, and lots of Fords, up to F-550

Input Torque (Max ft-lb): 7890

GVW: 17,500

Thats what I know. Correct me if I'm wrong.

DLD had a smaller output shaft, some DHD had a PTO cover but they didn't have the large output shaft. Look for the one piece rear cone. I think the diameter of the DHD that is the heavy one is 1. 6" or maybe a little larger. Like Garrett said lots of people run the DHD and have good luck with it. If you have a 98 and newer the 271 is a good option, I believe they are actually less $$ than the 241DHD. They will work on the 97 and older, but you have to come up with a way to get the speedo to work.

I am sure the driveshafts have to be modified. BBD, or Bobcat would know. Bobcat may not know cause there wasn't anything left of his stock driveshafts when he replaced his case. Some others have done this hopefully they will respond.

Wow, got alot of feed back on this one. Thanks for the input. Right now I have the stock 241DLD. Its worn out and I was thinking of upgrading. I was thinking about getting a 241DHD, but thats like floggin the same horse with a different bat. I think I will stay with the 241DLD and just rebuild the one I have. I pretty much need all the internal peices replaced and was trying to find a good used on, but have not had much luck. I think I will just get a reman unit and go. Thanks for the info. Oo.

Norm, I will be going to the 271 case when the money comes in for the SBC iron giant and I can put everything back together. I have heard good things and it definately looks to be a stouter unit over the 241 DHD. Wonder why those have lost their speedo, mine is still working fine. Did the '98s and above come with the speedo ring in the axle?

Joe

You need a longer front driveshaft and a shorter rear driveshaft if going from a 241DLD to a 271 in a automatic truck.

Thats all I know for sure.

I have a DLD in my 96 5 speed, and a truck I worked on that was just like mine made a few weeks away later had a DHD with the 2 piece output shaft housing.

I believe for the manual trans trucks all is needed to shorten the rear driveshaft. I will be installing my 271 in my '98 12v this next weekend, so I will post up my findings for the front driveshaft if it is going to need lengthening. :D

For the record both my manual trucks have the DLD-a 98 and my 2000 salvage truck.

Have problems with leakage... but that's another story.

I'd like to hijack this for a question also. I have a friend with an '03 2500 4x4. Does this have the 271? What's it worth with 25000 miles on it?

Well, friend GAVE me the 271 so I think I'm going to be putting it in my '98. Does anyone know the low ratio in the 271?

JGHeen I'd be interested in know if you had to mod the drive shafts after your installation weekend. Does auto/manual make any difference?
