Has anyone had a problem with rear wheel lockup.

Driving down the road about 35 mph, the right side locked up

tight. Just glad was not at 65 or 70 mph. Had to be towed, by a Ford no less. Sounds like something came loose in the brakes.

Anyone heard of this ?

Never heard of the brakes having a mind of their own. Not too much can go wrong with a rear drum to do that. You'd really have to lose a spring or other brake part that would wedge in between the drum and the lining to cause a lockup to just happen. What can and usually does happen is a rear axle seal leaking which causes the rear brake to lock a rear wheel when applying the brakes moderately at speed. I had to replace both my rear seals at 50K due to massive rear lockup which really freaked me out when it happened.

Be sure they look at the drum closely for crack(s). That kind of force could cause one.

A cracked drum will do this when you step on the brake but not consistantly.

I have seen the lining come off one shoe and jam in between the other lining and drum several times on Ford trucks. I hope thats all it is as it's easy to replace shoes.

Thanks for the replies,

I will keep you posted on the reason for the wheel lockup.

Hope to get it looked at tomorrow.

Just had the seals and brakes done about 10k ago.

Thanks again

Just to let you know how things turned out.

Ended up being a frozen wheel bearing, lack of oil.

I had seals and shoes replaced @ 31k, oil changed @35k and 39k,

by local dealer. All fluids were supposed to be checked. The dealer

that fixed the wheel bearing, stated he could find no leaks, and said that he though it must have been improperly filled @ 31k,

and never checked during the next 2 oil changes. Chrysler will not cover under warranty, I'm @ 42k. And dealer that originally did the work says he not liable. I guess if you have dealer do any work you have to go back and check it yourself or stand there while they do the work. REALLY SUCKS.

hmmm

The day I picked up my truck, I told the dealer that he should go out and take one last look at it, because it'll never be seen there again. And for good reason. If I ever "fixed" a customer's truck like they do at the dealers, I'd be filing for employment at a dealership

Dealer work...

The dealer should redo the work. He is legally obligated to do so, know matter what they say. How long has it been since the bearing replacement? At the very least, the wheel bearing can be replaced under its own part warranty. The first thing to do is to contact the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. When the dealer gets notice by the BBB, they will be calling you to come in and have it fixed.

I am a former service manager, and the guy that told you he is not responsible is full of BS. The BBB will help you straighten it out, and you can check to see if any other complaints were filed. You can also go to small claims court as well.

Good luck, you do not deserve to be strong-armed around.

Thanks to all.

The bad part is they where the BEST Dealer I had ever been to.

I used to drive over an hour to have my oil changed.

The only dealer that when I made an appointment, did not ask if I

bought my truck from them. Hey! its a Dodge you are a Dodge dealer. But I have not concided yet. Waiting for the final bill, to give them a call. Will keep you posted.

 Question?? Did you pay to have the work done or did they do it out of kindness. If you paid, then they owe you a proper job because they failed. Stand your ground and tell them that the job was not done right and you want it fixed right. It's your money, if you had to pay for it. Even if you did not have to pay for it, they owe you a proper fix. I had a dealer try that with me and when I said I wanted to talk to the owner and not some manager, they started to perk right up. It was not until I asked for a phone and started dialing that I really got their attention. They asked who I was calling and when I told them my lawyer, they got real nice and I mean real nice. The rig got fixed and they always say yes sir now. Stand your ground and get hard nose with em.
