Iam looking at ways to get better mpg with the 4. 10 rear and with reducing the rpm down 400 rpm I should see about a 2-3 mpg increase while towing,at $1. 75/gal the unit at$3000. would pay for it's self in 55000 mi. not bad as long as the aux box can stand up to the load. I have been told that the gear vendors will not in heavy tow mode. Any one with US Gear time?

I don't think you would ever see 2-3 MPG increase. My 01. 5 had 4. 10's and got better milage then my 04. 5 with 3. 73's.

I had one in my 87 Ford. Don't know how much it helped mileage though because I did a lot of work all at once (turbo, filter & US gear). It sure was nice to have OD though with 4. 10s and a direct drive top gear, and the gear splitting was also a big plus for towing.

Cost wise, I think $3k is a little high. I was $300 into modifying both drivelines and that included 5 new u-joints installed. Also US Gear MSRP was $2,195 or $2,295 can't remember exactly, but I found a place online that was selling it for $2,100 shipped to me, so I took that to my local distributor, said if you can hit that number, you got a sale. I paid $2,125 including the governor's cut.

On edit: Forgot to mention I loved having it, most of my friends were jealous that I had an 8 speed transmission, just imagine the drooling over a 12 speed transmission... . :D

I ran a U. S. Gear unit on my 97 CTD for over 100K with no problems. You will always have the perfect gear for any load. You should see some gain in MPG. I liked the double OD for high speed freeway travel and splitting gears towing a heavy load... .

I am curious as to why you wouldn't consider an aux box for you new Dodge?

I used one on my '91 - really helped running empty on the freeway by keeping RPM lower - and OCCASIONALLY in unusual towing situations that happened to permit the right gear split - but as far as I could tell, overall fuel consumption was not improved measurably. I've used both the US Gear and GearVenders units - pretty much the same results with both.

I loved my GV on my 02 for quiet highway (1600's) but mileage about the same (3. 54's). A 4. 10 would love one. GV's are used in 1200hp dragsters so don't buy the "light duty" line. I towed with mine fine. (Not using it on new truck so PM me if interested in mine). My new truck is going to have very tall tires so not installed on it. George

I PM'd you this morning!!

This is interesting discussion. I don't know anything about these units you guys are discussing. Although, I do feel that at 75 with my 4. 10's it just feels like I need another gear or two. How do these boxes work?

It's an auxilary gear box that added to the rear of the transmission and be bought either as an over drive or underdrive the 2 speed box has an electric shift that gives you 2 gears for every main gear in the transmission,so for pulling heavy loads you have a 12 speed option instead of 6. I am looking at the US Gear because the heavy haulers tell me that Gear Venders unit is not compatable with an e-brake under heavy load. You can read about US Gear at www. us gear .com. I'm not sure of the GV site.
