Thought this report might be useful to those considering a upgrade from their stock turbo.

With Edge EZ, DD2's & DTT transmission, I had air problems with the stock HY-35 turbo. I don't tow but regularly haul @ 8500 to 9,000 lbs. Without turnbuckle on wastegate I had to back off throttle due to high EGT,s. With Turnbuckle, could pull 38-40 psi but turbo sounded like it was ready to explode and power seemed to flatten out quickly, due to high temp intake air, I guess.

After many searches, I went with the Kwik Spool B-1B due to a) Reported quality and b) Room to grow HP later on.

After 2,000 miles, My findings & opinions are:

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Couldn't be happier; Quality is excellent; performance is all I was promised & more than I expected.

PERFORMANCE RESULTS

-Spoolup is only slightly slower than HY-35. Very easy to get use to. No silencer ring- pleasant whine to let you know its working.

-Smoke Level is about the same and easily controlled. Actually appears to be less-probably due to fall weather (cooler air) showing up the same week I installed the new turbo.

-EGT Level; @ 8,500 lbs and full throttle- Quicker increase than HY-35. Jumps to 900 degrees but increase after that is slow motion. Gradual climb to 1150 degrees over 30 sec +/-. Could not create situation with temps > 1200 degrees. (I'm @ 650' altitude).

-Boost Levels: 38-40 psi @ WOT. Judging by straight line acceleration curve (seat of the pants feel) it's all usable cool air. From 10 psi to 100 mph, my CTD feels like a rocket sled compared to previous turbo. MFG claims this turbo can easily handle 55 psi.

-Horse Power: Did before and after Dyno on a Dynojet 248c. Gained 20 HP - from 320. 6 to 340. 5.

-Cool Down: adds 10-15 seconds on average. Easily handled with a little planning ahead.

Only downside was not being prepared for having to cut & weld down pipe to fit new turbo. Had heard of this problem from another TDR member so bgt. turbo manufacturers down pipe. Still didn't fit. Had to removed 1" at flange (on exhaust) to move down pipe 1" forward-away from transmission tunnel where it was hitting truck body.

Aside from this headache, the KSB-1B is a real winner in my opinion and well worth the investment.

I have same setup and dito each comment except I did not dyno before and after.

I have gone from 8k 5er to 12k 5er and first tow (flat central florida) is tommorrow (12/3/03). I expect zero problems, but will comment at a later date.

I got the B1 for eventual growth IF necessary (connect the VP wire?).

When empty and the boost >8 you better have clear road ahead, you are going to NEED it before you blink twice.

I did not get the wastegate option since the DD2's & Comp (1x5) have not pushed it over ~32#.

Would definitely do the KSB1B again!

Have almost same set up, see sig below. My first good long pull will be in a few days after new clutch is installed. Taking a trip up to Washington with a 32' enclosed gooseneck. Will give my findings when I get back.

On a side note TAP THAT WIRE!

They do not come wastegated, but Kurt had a waste gate he about had ready to go about 6 months ago when I bought mine. Should be ready for purchase by now, but get with Kurt to know for sure.

No wastegate on a B-1 but it's being tested as we speak but not the one that is talked about, don't worry about boost with the B-1
