For those of you who don't remember (it's been a while) or new to this topic, I have been trying to get an aux gearbox with a ratio near 0. 85 to split the gears in my F-450 (ZF-6). The average gearbox (like the NV 5600) has a step to about 70% of revs as you go up through the gears (only 5-6 in the ZF), and the available 0. 78 and 0. 8 auxiliary gearboxes DO NOT split this step usefully, regardless of what the advert hype says.
After much cajolling, USGear agreed to make me a custom gearset (actually a small run), but they finally realized the value of the gear ratio and are going to test this with a view to making it a standard product. They 0. 8555 gears for the Dual Range Auxiliary transmission are turned and hobbed, and go out for heat treating this week. When they get back, they will be final ground and assembled for a test on the dyno. Road tests to follow immediately after. Sorry for the delays, but they are really backlogged at the plant.
I run a Powerjoke in a 450 4WD tractor pulling a dedicated trailer at around 33k most of the time, so my need is obvious to anyone who has towed through the Rockies up in the high 20s. The new ratio, when available, will fit any new or existing USG Dual Range Auxiliary Transmission (see www.usgear.com)
Will let you know how things are going as soon as I hear the next development.
