Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) using a good ve motor to replace junk p pump motor

I Have a 96 p-pump motor that has something major wrong internal i believe. I also have a good ve motor. Can i take both motor and change the front covers and all that fun stuff and make a good one. I heard the heads diffrent though? thanks for all the help and the answers to my ?'s. Thanks Travis

Yes the head is a little different. If its a early style the injector bore is smaller.

The early VE heads have a LARGER injector hole into the chamber, 9 mm instead of 7 mm. The good casting is 3925400-00. use the P pump engine cam if it is OK and keep the lifters in order. The engine needs to be on its side or upside down so the lifters won't fall, or use the trough and wood stick method as in the service manual. You have to pull the cam to change the front cover. Obviously, contain the dowel pin and loctite the bolts that are inside the case.

From what I have read the P pumped heads flow better than the VE heads... . so it might be worth your while to use your existing head if possible.

IF you have no choice but to use the VE head, and it's an old head with the large 9mm injector bores (from a non I/C engine) , there are adapters available (copper bushings) so you can use the 7mm injectors. But be advised that Cummins went to the smaller bore for a reason..... to reduce the occurance of cracks in that area... .
