What can I do to use the BIG fuel pumps at flying J? I am tired of waiting 20 minutes for tank to fill at the "mercedes" pump...

I heard someone say theres a ball in in the filler neck, how do you get it out??

I always fill up at the big nozzle pump. If you fool around with how far the nozzle sticks down in the neck you can use the second click. Fills up pretty quick then. It's the light duty engine boys that can't use the big pumps.

I just used the big pumps today. They didn't change the filler neck size on the 2003's either. Quick fill up.

My 97 never has a problem with the big pumps either.

A while back there was some speculation as to whether using a higher flow rate with the big nozzles would damage the fuel gauge sender unit.

I use the first click to also help keep the foaming down.

I accidentally used one once while I wasn't paying attention and couldn't figure out how I filled up the tank in 15-seconds. Should've clicked when I initially saw the previous sale was $175.

Thats a pretty good pit stop, figure out how you can get the tires changed and the window washed and we will put you in the NASCAR tour.

cheers, Kevin

If you track milage...

Don't be too hasty using the big nozzle. To high of a volumn will foam the fuel more. You won't get as much in the tank.

I have to disagree with that. I always use the big nozzle. The small ones I used to use seemed to foam the fuel more. I have less squeeze and click with the big nozzles to get clear fuel topped off in the neck than I had with the small. I think the high speed flow thru the small nozzles foams it more.

Well, that could be. I can't remember the last time I used a small nozzle. I know that one place I get from, I need to keep it in the first notch. Guess it could be a difference in pumps.

I agree with QRTRHRS, unless you are in a rush, you will get a better fill just trickling it in. I learned this the hard way last year, when I first filling the in bed aux. tank. Really foamed up. Now I just use the big nozzle and trickle it in, when I'm not tight for time. Not sure how much those big rig guys will enjoy the wait though. I'm fortunate enough to have a trucking co. near work and fill up late when no ones around.

Big or small nozzle, I just put it on full flow and let it fill up as fast as it wants to. When it clicks off, there's usually a couple gallons of foam in the tank. Now I pull the nozzle mostly out of the neck, aim the tip upward, and run a slow-ish trickle. Aiming it upward eliminates the air/foam at the slow flow. I almost always end up with fuel 6" from the top of the filler. I run full speed because I'm usually putting 28-32 gallons in, and really don't want to be standing around for a half-hour. :)

I don't worry about it being *that* full because I'm usually immediately driving 10 miles, which should empty the neck right smartly.

Someday I'll take the time to find where the air intake is and block it, if possible. I can understand gasoline being foamed to minimize splashing, but there's really no need to have #2 foamed *that* much.

Using big rig pumps

There must be something different between my truck and that of those who replied that they can operate big-rig pumps at full blast into their stock tank. . I can barely get it to work on the first click of the op. handle, it has to positioned just right or it keeps clicking off... (still way faster than the Mercedes pump though... )

We all talk about courtesy for one thing or another. I personally don't think it is courtious to use the big pumps when there is a RV pump available. Now if there is no RV pump different story for sure by all means use the big pump. Now this is a personal thing and all my not agree but think about it at least. :( I like the idea though we can use the big pump and the other light duty cannot!!!!Oo.

Just came back from Texas, whats the story with Flying J???

the price of the car diesel was 3 cents cheaper then the big pumps(in most stations). Am I missing something?

BTW:somebody forgot to clean all those mens rooms.

The places I usually fill up are CFN big rig places. Lots of pumps with the big nozzles. I think I delayed some big rigs just once. That was when three came in at the same time. The guy who pulled in behind me just grinned and said take your time.

If I push the nozzle all the way as far as it will go then the first click is that works. If I pull it out a little then most of the time I can use the second.
