The same thing happened to me only I filled up at the big pump with the higher price without noticing that this pump was $. 03/gal. higher that the price posted on the roadside sign. I was told that the truckers always use a credit card to pay and that is why the price is higher. I offered to pay cash but they would not give me a cash discount.

Almost forgot,Had a situation in state line ,Nevada in a station on the north side of the 15:i pull in,there is a line of 10 cars waiting to fuel up in the car isles, no big rig in the big pumps,so i go there, when i go inside to pay im informed by the di*kless wonder clerk that im soposed to go to the car fill up isles, after a brief discussion with him and the store manager that said :"if you dont like it go elsewere"(Im cleaning up the language)

the wife had to drag me away after a few choice words exited my mouth.

Moral of the story:not all truck stops will let you use the big pumps

Remember that most credit card companies charge the merchant around three percent to use a credit card. Think how much gas is bought at a truck stop and add it up, it a lot of dough. At the Flying J in Fife you can get the cash price at the big rig pumps. You just need to let the merchant know. However, I never carry cash so I just break out the debit card and pay full price..... much more convenient as my time is worth more than the . 90 cents I would save. :)

In case you guys dont get it... .....

it dont matter if you pay cash or cradit,if you fill at the car pumps(diesel that is)you pay 3 cents less a gallon vs the big rig pumps at the same station... ... ... . i (still) dont get it.

I've found the truck stops here in PA on I-80 are a rip off compared to off-interstate stations. I found that the local Petro and All American truckstops were 11 cents more than the two diesel stations closer to my home. I won't go to a big truckstop unless I'm desperate. And yes, the local places DO move a lot of fuel. All the local truckers fill up where I go.

Funny this topic of the big nozzle came up now. When I last filled up last Friday at my local place, there was a guy with a Chevy at the pump as I approached from his front. As I stopped at the pump he say's "You'll have to get behind me to use this skinny nozzle" and as I shut down I said I never use them if I can avoid them. He was rather surprised. I always run the big nozzle full-tilt. I can put in 30 gallons in about 1 minute, fifteen seconds (yeah, I timed it one day). Of course I spend another five minutes trickling in the rest till I get clear fuel in the neck. I swear they must mix dishwashing liquid with diesel to get all that foam.

Where I typically fill up, the only Diesel pumps ARE the big rig pumps. Sometime I wait on them, sometimes they wait on me… I always use the first click, and this usually gives me time to do a full check of fluids and a quick look-around before topping off. As soon as I’m full, I pull up to free the bay. Even if there are six empty pumps, they can fill up fast. The “big guys” seem to appreciate that, and I’ve never had a big rig driver – or fuel station operator – give me any grief for not using RV pumps when available. That includes Flying-J. As for the price differential at Flying-J, I never even bother to look. At a 3-cent difference, I figure a tank runs be no more than a buck extra, and I’d rather pay that than have to wait for an RV pump.

Flying J is a rip-off!!!!

Heres' the deal.....

Flying J gouges the Big rigs (Me) if we want to use a credit card at the Big pumps.

If I go to RV pumps (Which I do if noone is there) I can use a credit card and pay 3 cents less (cash price )

If I go to car pumps (which I do not do) I can use a credit card and pay 3 cents less (again, cash price)

If I go to Big-Rig pump, they harass you for info about my truck, company, and personal info. then if I use a credit card, they'll charge $. 03 more per gallon (credit price)

Point is that Most truckers do not carry large amounts of cash on them, they use some form of credit, or com-check, ect. . Flying J uses that to their advantage.

I think that in all fairness, they should either charge everyone at every pump the surcharge if they use credit , or do away with it entirely

I only go to the big rig pumps when the little ones are full of PSDs and DMaxs.

I don't use Flying J, but I have found (like Tulsa618) that if you pull forward like the 18-wheelers do for each other, nobody gives you any crap.

I really like it when the light dutys come in next to you thinking they can use the Rig pump. Clunk, Clunk. :D

I fill up at Flyin' J because their prices are decent but mostly because they get two to three loads dropped there a day from the refinery which is about 20 minutes away. This way I know it's fresh. The bad thing about filling up at truck stops is that their pumps are usually nasty and there is diesel fuel on the ground and all over the pump handle. Tracking diesel fuel in on your truck carpet is a bad thing. ;) I bought myself a box of surgical gloves and keep a few in the console. After I fill up I just roll the glove off into trash. Sometimes I do get some odd looks but anybody that has had a diesel understands. Also look at the nozzle before you put it in the filler neck. I have seen all kinds of things on the nozzles and caked on crud. Maybe I'm too careful but after all my truck is my baby. (Don't tell my girl. ) ;)

P. S. So you can't fill a powerpuke or a maxipad up at the big rig pumps heh? I didn't know that. I'm so glad that I got a REAL truck!

Another side of the

price difference is the state taxing - AZ has a tax for the big rigs and the fuel at those pumps is higher. So, I usually ck the price when traveling but in NM I use the big pumps for the quick fill and double filtering. If price is the same I'll use the big pumps and get outta the way as soon as possible, go around and go inside to sign my Fly J ticket and be gone. If all the bays are filled, then you still is faster than another big rig in front of another big rig. Only once did I get "grief" for using the big pumps and that was in TX (small stop - only had 2 big rig pumps and 1 'little' pump).

Well I may have to start using the big ones. Last night at Flying J I waited about 20 minutes. All the car lanes were backed up and the RV lanes were full and some were even dumping their sewage.

I've used the big nozzels before many times, but the disadvantage is I usually end up with fuel oil all over my hands as the nozzels are covered with in. Plus it's usually spilled all over the ground too, so it gets tracked in the truck.

I have a hand towel I keep in the door pocket. After fueling I dip my hands in the windshield washer bucket and then dry them on the towel. Most of the time there is just water in the bucket but it seems to get the diesel off ok anyway.
