Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Using CJ-4 Motor Oil

My supply of CI4 oil has dried up and my '98 12V is due for another oil change. Perhaps I've missed it, but what's the current advice for using CJ4 oil? Are there any "good" options left? Recommended additives? Or do I just shorten my oil change intervals and live with CJ4 oil? #@$%!

Depends what your oil change intervals are?

I am using Premium Blue CJ and changing at 6000 miles( using MicroGlass,now Stratapore filters). I drive 11 miles to work but when I put my Mule to work it travels aprox 160 to 200 miles once or twice a week.

Amsoil oil and filters. Good for 12-25K changes. PM me if you're interested.

Perhaps I've missed something over the years, but why haven't the manufactures come out with an additive for all of us who can use CI 4 oil. I understand that they have to produce CJ 4 for the DPF folks, but why not an additive that will increase the properties of CJ 4 to a CI 4 status? Maybe it's not possible, but if it is, why not?

RJ- because then those guys with the newer trucks would add it to their oil. Since the new oil "specs out" to YOUR truck, Mr. B. Oil isn't going to produce two choices of the "same" oil. There are options, as fes3 points out.

Thanks for the comments. It's sad to see that no one produces a good additive for the new oil, but it's good to know that Amsoil is offering CI4 oil. Are there any other manufactures still selling CI4 oil?

Most users of CJ4 oil that have had oil analysis run on their used oil have found no increased engine wear. I used CJ4 on my 03 for several hundred thousand miles after using CI4+ for the previous couple of hundred thousand. The only difference I saw was the TBN number was only 6. 6 after a 12k mile oil change interval. Still plenty of base left in the oil. I used Shell Rotella 15W40 dino oil. I use the same oil in my 95, but change oil every 6k miles instead of 12k since I only put about 8 or 10k miles on my truck per year. Personnally, I wouldn't sweat using CJ4 instead of CI4+, but would definitely stick with a major brand.

Camshaft and lifter assembly lube... not the paste stuff, but the liquid assembly lube. Several "engine break-in" lubes found at your local parts stores will also do the same function. YOu want to find something that has ZDP in it. (zinc di***phosphate)
