Using oil!!!

My 05 QCSB is using oil bad. 2 gallons in about 2000-3000 miles! I have no blow by, no external leaks, very little smoke out tailpipe when started cold. I've checked intake side of turbo, nothing there. I've checked elbow going to intercooler, nothing there. I removed down pipe and seen nothing oblivious there, just carbon/soot. I can move the shaft on the intake side out the turbo enough where I can hear it clunking back and forth!! Turbo bad??? Also, how important is it to adjust the valves on a regular basis? I bought the truck with 132,000 miles 6 years ago and it now has 225,000 miles on it. I've never adjusted them!! Please help!!!
 
I would guess it needs an overhaul. What air filter style are you using? I don't think you can see blow by on a 3rd gen, I think it is plumbed into the intake somewhere.

Did this start suddenly or over a period of time. The in/out movement of the turbo shaft is probably normal. ahave you ever had the oil tested to see if it has diesel in it? bg
 
The movement in the turbo is not in and out movement, it's side to side movement. The impeller almost contact the housing. I had the oil tested about 8 months ago, they said everything looked normal. This problem started about 2 months ago.
 
Don't know what the specs are on 05, I have a manual for 99 and it shows axial movement, .0015" min./.0035" max. and side to side .0128" min/.0195" max. Maybe some oil could be going out the turbine side of the exhaust but you would think the exhaust would show it unless you are working the truck on loaded long hauls. bg
 
What brand and weight oil are you using? I don't know if this matters much, but it did make a big difference on a F250 gasser I had before I bought my first CTD in 95.

Are you noticing any loss of boost? With that much movement in the turbo I would think you're probably losing the oil through the turbo bearings.

As far as the valve adjustments, yes you should do it as prescribed by the owners manual but that's not the source of your oil consumption. Hopefully the previous owner had them adjusted at 100k. Either way I imagine there are TONS of CTD's out there that have never had a valve adjustment, just not that many on this forum.

I'm not looseing any boost at all. It's have got me stumped!!!! Anybody else have any ideas???
 
Adjust your passenger mirror to watch the tailpipe for blue smoke on takeoff. (Startup isn't relevant/helpful.)
Inspect the turbo intercooler boots for oil.
Do a UOA now. Again.
Pull the exhaust manifold off and look for a wet port.
Since the manifold is off - Spin the engine with the fuel disabled - diesel engines can smoke off the oil in the problem cylinder and more likely to do so from a valve stem seal after sitting like the Chevy 350's.

You have rings, valve guides/seals, and a turbo if there are no external leaks. As noted above lots of fuel in the oil can show up like this. Also dusting the rings from a bad air filter or intake leak is known to happen.

UOA??? Are the manifold gaskets reusable?? I'm not seeing any blue smoke on takeoff. But you can smell it!!
 
UOA: Used Oil Analysis. Tells you if you dumped a bunch of fuel in the oil, have extreme soot from a cracked piston, odd wear from eating something like a ring to scratch a cylinder wall, coolant in oil killing things quick, or nothing at all.

So check oil with a UOA, check turbo, and then look at engine overhaul/rebuild. Hope it's something cheap...
