oh I got the door rot issue

todt061458,

Tod,

Keep the April 23 date open on your calendar. We are trying to get together a Illinois chapter of the GLTDR. Oo. Oo. Oo.

The event will be in Minooka industrial park. :)

Thanks for the kanolabs tip. :cool:

WyattEarp,

Loved that handle especially for your job. ;)

I used Magnet Paints chassis saver last year on my complete undercarriage. It held up real well over the winter. The driveshaft & hitch stayed a nice gloss black. :-laf

I'm glad that Illinois doesn't use to much of the liquid ice melt to really mess up our trucks. :{

EBottema,

How does that 3m product smell after beeing [ no pun ] :-laf applied smell?

Have you used it? :eek:

Great ideas guys.

I also recommend the 3M Rust Preventative spray. Sprayed the doors almost 4 years ago and so far no rust. I bought it at an automotive paint shop.

Good Luck

Bill

Tod,

Look forward to meeting you then.

Till then ----see the events list for future updates.

wlowe,

Thanks for your vote on the 3M product.

We all need the input.

Never seen it used but talked to the guy at the body store and he says it is very good stuff. It is like beeswax, never dries stays flexible but good rust inhibitor...

3m rustfighter

That stuff sounds like what they used to (and still might... ) coat military supplies with. By coating the ever living daylights out of things... they can be stored for many, many years and come out looking like new.

Cosmoline comes to mind...

Yes, you got it. If you are familiar, VW sprays the inside of their doors with gallons and gallons of natural beeswax. When it gets hot it oozes out of the door and gets all over the body. A very primative things that works wonders IMO. I will next week be trying the rust fighter for the first time, ill let you all know how it works out!

Im on hold with Dodge right now to see if they will help me out. I've got a li'l over 100k. They have already told me "NO" about my transmission... lets see what they tell me on the door rot issue... .

erik,

Let us know how the beeswax works out. The good & bad , play by play of course. :p Any smell reports ??? How about yellow jacket attacks ????

Holysmokes,

Why did the dealer turn you down on the trans ? :(

Best of luck with the door!!! :)

My driver door has bulging rust under the paint on the outside surface at the bottom of the door. The very bottom of the door is also bad. The drain holes for the water that collects from rain inside the door was not working. The passenger door is also starting at the very bottom and not on the side yet.

I went to the local dealer last June 04 in Melbourne. He said he could fix it for 300 bucks. He saw I had more than 100k on the truck, not five years old yet, and said he could not help.

He made an appointment with the district person to look at it. That took another 8 months after calling the dealer many times.

Finally got to meet the District person who said I could have it fixed at the dealership, but I would have to pay. I asked for a quote to replace the drivers door and fix the passenger door at the bottom. After many phone calls

I still have not got a quote. I told the District person, I would go to small claims court with the estimate and bring in some paint experts I know that would say the rust started inside the door long time before a 100k. I told them I would fix a door and cut the old on open and take pictures. Truck was not 5 years old yet. Born date Dec 99.

I guess thats why I did not get a quote. No salt on the roads here. We do have weather that promotes rust.

I know when I lived in florida my rust problems were more hidden that salt in the air gets into the smallest hidden places. Never had rust start from the outside on a properly taken care of auto/truck but would always eat from the inside out. :{ Good luck with your dealer :-{} :-{} :{

turned me down on transmission because its got 102K (at the time) 100k warranty is for rust and engine only. i thought it was 100k power train warranty. as far as the door rot they told my i had to pay dealer to diagnose rust. (apparently she feels i have no idea what rust looks like) so i went tonight and did that. tomorrow she will call dealer and verify and "she will think about authorizing assistance for repairs". wow... spend all that $$$ for their product and they will "think about" helping the cust. nice huh? :rolleyes:

You guys really need to look into Rustcheck from Canada. It pushes water out of seams and kills rust on contact. I think a case cost me $36. 00 plus shipping. It smells a little like strawberry and wicks into the smallest places. Check it out. I don't sell it just use it and find it to be the best stuff out there. Get together with a buddy or two and split a case of six cans.

DHawthorne,

Keep on their case to get your repair. :-{}

I replaced my drivers door & fender to keep my truck longer. Oo.

The $702 was patrs guy discount for me. Be careful of the $300 fix.

Keep us updated on what happens,

Just an update. I went to the dealership. (like dodge customer service told me to do) paid for a diagnostic fee (so they could say"hey your door are rusting through") waited... . waited... . waited... they told me to get bent. My truck has 105K miles and we warranty for 100K. Service mgr talked to District manager... he told me same thing. I told them how they expected me to be a repeat customer and spend 46K on a truck that the body is good for 5 years. . I'd have to take the loan out longer than that? " Sir, Thats not our problem" SO... . new window decal will read"When it comes to helping the customer... DODGE IT! #@$%!

Last week (Monday I think) in Milford CT a '94~96 ish 2500 pulls up next to me (two tone silver/ red) and the guy I work with starts laughin like mad. What WHAT I said. Hang on you gotta see this sign. So the guy creeps by me and on the back and sides done in beautiful professional lettering ... .

"Crap paint and sweet body rot curtesy of our friends at Dodge"

Man I wish I had a camera as that was just plain priceless. The sides were on the topper and back was on the tailgate.

Sorry you are having problems but is ford or general motors any better?? I have seen fords and gm's with crappy paint in the past. I think I read once here in these forums it was a industry wide problem for awhile. Keep the pressure on mabe something will come of it. Sure wish we had more smilies to choose from!

Take Dodge to Small claims court. Have a bodyman write a letter stating the product was bad and did not last as long as normal trucks last. You have a good chance at winning. Screw Dodge and DC I personally will not buy anything made by them after the mid 70's unless it was a cummins deisel truck before 2002... . I hate all their new products, they suck... .

Ford and GM products had terrible paint in the late 80's early 90's their paint is much better nowadays. Their drivetrains might suck but the rest of the truck is well built. Esp. the fords.

This is my first Dodge, also my first vehicle (not counting my POS '87 Toyota) that has had any rust. Surface rust for now. On the doors, rockers and bumpers. All my other trucks have been Ford. Never any rust. And with those I lived in the midwest, in the salt belt basically, and on a gravel road. Now I live in town and in Colorado where they don't seem to use as much salt.

My wifes '97 Expedition with 135k on it has no rust..... My 2001 Dodge with 67k on it has rust..... :confused:
