Is it possible to replace the V-band clamp that clamps the cast iron elbow to the turbo without having to remove the turbo? The bolt that tightens the clamp broke I and can not tell if the clamp actually comes all the way part to allow it to go around the turbo without having to slip it over one end.

How critical is this clamp? The turbo and cast iron elbow sure seem tight. I need to use the tuck until I can get a new clamp.

Follow up- Dealer is having a hard time finding the clamp. It is different from the one on the exhaust elbow.

Thanks,

Tom

OOPS. I just checked again. It is not the clamp that attaches to the cast elbow. It is the one right behind the turbo and right behind what I am guessing is the oil supply line (chrome).

Is this also a V-Band clamp? It looks a little different.

I am assuming that the only effect of this clamp will be a small exhaust leak since it is located off the exhaust header it is not on the pressurized side so will not effect boost? I can't see if having a big exhaust leak if any.

As you can tell I don't know a lot (anything) about turbos. :)

Thanks for all the help.

don't take it off until you get a new one--if it's the clamp I think it is it holds the exhaust housing on and keeps the exhaust housing from rotating---yes you may get a leak and this will affect boost---there's pressure there and usually it's more than the boost or at least the same---if you take the clamp off you can blow the exhaust housing off---the clamp is there for a reason---get it fixed ASAP..... chris

X2, get it fixed. The elbow after the turbo comes off fairly easily. You do not have to remove the turbo. There is a small dowel pin that locates the elbow to the turbo to keep it in the right position.

V-Bands clamps are great. They seal up 2 pipe flanges real tight. They can be seperated anytime and seal back up like new.

there are 4 clamps on/at the turbo. . one tight behind the compressor housing, one right before the exhaust turbine housing [the oil line is between those 2] if either of those clamps is broken, i would not drive it. if they let go, the turbine or compressor sections can shift and scrub the pinwheels inside. . that equals NFG turbo. there is 2 more clamps past the turbine section. one for the turbine housing to cast elbow, the last is cast elbow to downpipe.

first 2 clamps
