Bottom End Power Is Back+++

I love my diesel, but, that might have something to do with the fact that I drive 50k+ per year. I want a vehicle that is still running at its peak when the payments stop. If I only put on 20k per year, it would be a much harder decision. Choice is good; I'm extremely happy with mine!

Pistons

The cummins motor is designed to be held WOT for hours on end. Gassers just don't take that kind of abuse well at all. Even with the best gas the V-10s are known to ping under a heavy load. If you have any spark knock at all your on your way to new parts. I deliver to a shop that does fleet service work for a company that hauls loads with v10 dodges(why?) and they are bad about eating pistons up. Don't like the cost of a diesel?? Rebuild a V-10 and then rethink it lol. Plus if your hauling heavy wouldn't you want the 100K motor warranty the cummins has?

Hmmm, over 45,000 miles on ours, almost all pulling 5th wheels. No spark knock. No ping. No burned pistons. Total engine failures since new - one oil pressure sending unit and one fan clutch. I respectfully suggest that we avoid painting all V-10's with such a broad brush, as based on our experience, ours has done just what we asked it to do for over 5 years without complaint. :rolleyes:

V10 joke

Are you guys crazy, I pull a 32. ft fifth with a trailer behind(equals about 12k-13k), and I get 12-13 mpg pulling 7% grades. This is at a rate of 70-75 miles an hour.

As for the power of the v-10, sure stock they will out pull a cummins, But I guarantee you my truck will blow the doors off a v-10 equipted truck. The thing they dont understand about the cummins is that they are totally designed for comercial use"like pullng". The v-10 isnt. When have you ever seen a gas engine in a tractor trailer.

A buddy of mine has a new v-10 ford super duty that is totally modified, and I spank him bad. When his motor is toast at a 100k or so mine will be just broke in.

Finally I dont know where everybody else gets fuel but were I live, diesel fuel is 20 cents at a average cheaper than gas.

Keep on truckin:cool: :cool: :cool:

I would have to agree with Rusty. Not everyone puts 50K miles on their truck every year. We owned our '98 V-10 3500 4x4 for four years, and managed to accumulate a total of only 36,000 miles on it, of which 90% were accumulated while towing 9,000 to 11,000 lbs. We had no engine knock, no pinging, and no other problems what so ever. In four years that truck never needed a trip to the dealers sevice dept. , not even one single time. It was the most reliable vehicle I've EVER owned.

My '02 ETH/DEE 3500 4x4 has already been to the service dept. to try and figure out why it doesn't make the power that it should (I was told nothing was wrong with it).

My only complaint with the V-10 that I had was the milage, whick wasn't as bad as some small blocks I've driven! After I installed the factory headers and computor, flowed the throttle body and went to a K/N air filter I was averaging about 13. 5-14 mpg on the highway. This was in a "95 2500 4X4 with 3:54 gears. I had no problems with that truck the entire time I owned it and wish I could have kept it as a spare. It sure was awsome to drive!

OK everybody, I'm over it!!! I really do like my truck and I have decided to keep it. Whatever it was that came over me I shook it off and came to my senses.

Just to make sure I was over it I took it to the tire store yesterday and put 6 new Michelins on it and for an added measure I went by the local Big Boy's Toys store and got it a aluminum box for it's bed (for my golf clubs).

I think I will take it to the muffler shop Monday to see what they can do about the exhaust noise. I never have like that Walker anyway.

Thanks for all your input.

Why are you guys complaining about towing mileage while using a 3. 54 differential. DC recommends a 4. 01 for towing. With the 3. 54 you are over the recommended GCVW for any serious towing. With my '96 and 4. 01 gearing, I tow at 13 mpg (10,500+#) and 19 mpg solo around town. I have no complaint. Incidentally, my truck is stock, at this point.
