I agree on them about the 300 cubic inch Inline 6 that ford had, great engine, would run forever.

I have always liked the straight 6 engines either gas or diesel there is no comparison when it comes to low down grunt power, miles for the buck and gas/fuel mileage...

Never again will a V-8 truck take up residence here, the last V8 was my dads 97 350 with that gutless 5. 8 litre engine, no balls whatsoever.
 
I'm with you WyattEarp. I've always liked the simplicity, balance and depedability of the I-6 whether it was gas or diesel. The Ward's article was pretty nice icing on the cake. I take it they don't like the V series diesels any more than I do. :p
 
Less moving parts for sure are a advantage of the I6, take for instance even the military since the early 50's if not 40's when the CUCK trucks come out and then later the Gas in their M135 trucks were all Inline 6, the Multifuel you see in my signature is a Inline 6 diesel which has the capability to burn anything with a flash point in a emergency situation but diesel is its main fuel, the military knows the importance of reliability and simplicity in a engine.

Don't get me wrong i drove a work van with the 7. 3 International(loved that van good runner it was) and then later a 7. 3 powerstroke which was nice running but since i wasn't doing work on them that was the factor, My dad has always raved the I6 is more of an engine than a V8 any day, but each person has their own opinion of what they like in each design.

I just think with a diesel since we are dealing with compression versus spark on a gasser, that with a straight up and down force you have better reliability, and being able to handle such force at ignition. The multifuel i have is rate 22:1 compression, very little HP but big on torque and will move 14000lbs with ease.
 
Now that there is just frigin HILRARIOUS, thats a good little site there, I have to admit. I thought i was the only one that still played with little trucks LOL :-laf

i get that too, but everyone can mess it up on a locomotive... see, left side of the loco is right side of the engine, and right side of the loco is left side of the engine... the engine front is rear facing on the locomotives. the main generator/alternator is mounted behind the cab and it is attached to the flywheel which is the rear of the engine. one thing that messes up a lot of guys at my work place [we have easially 10x emd's than ge's we work on, and some rarely if ever work on ge's] is that a ge turbocharger is mounted at the front of the engine, and an emd turbocharger is mounted at the rear of the engine. so if they don't think about things, and assume, things get messed up... [like getting #6 and #8 power assemblies confused when working on a 12 cylinder instead of our normal 16 cylinders, or working on #10 on a 20 cylinder and ending up pulling #12 cause they think it is a 16 cylinder... ]

Nice pics Nick! Brings back memories of busted rods, crankcase explosions, pistons missing-rod still there, etc. And I had completely forgot about the GE master/articulate rod setup... . but then again I never worked a GE internally... just servicing.

When I worked for the RR, EMDs were plentiful, our GEs were new, not much done on them other than services. The GE " toaster techs " did warranty work. The new GEs are Duetz engines, aren't they?

i don't think so, but i am not really sure. .



the new EVO engines look like they will be good, but what does somewhat bother me is they are making the same 4500hp on 12 cylinders now vs the 16 cylinders the FDL series engine used... we are suppose to start taking delievery of these new evo's at work soon [4th qt]. we are getting 50 of them new es4400dc's and 25 new emd sd70 in the 2nd qt next year
