Well, I got the gauges installed last night. Here is what was done.

1. VDO pyro (pre-turbo)

2. VDO boost 0-30 (taped in elbow)

3. VDO non-shunted themocouple (real-time)

What I learned quickly:

1. 30lb boost gauge will not be enough. Need a little larger scale (a 50 will do nicely).

2. Exhaust temps raise far quicker than I ever thought possible.

3. WOT shifting at 2600rpm 0-70 yeiled 1275F with the VA Duration box at 50%.

4. WOT shifting at 2600rpm 0-70 yeilded 1550F with the VA at 100%.

When you let off the pedal it drops back really quick and at 70mph it runs about 750F.

It was 60F outside, and I was empty for the runs last night.

Hope that helps.

Cali model

Flores,

I don't have an answer for you on the Cali model. However DLeno will have some numbers from the 305 motor. It might just be the hot running 600.

gotta keep the cat at a workable temp. That is the reason for the 3rd injection event. what temps are you getting at idle.

No. EGT's will climb the same on all trucks. That is why I have always said that you shouldn't run a box without an EGT guage.

I don't understand that. If the Cali motor make 100HP less to begin with ,but uses the same Turbo to produce the same amount of air, should it not have a slower rise in EGT? If the power cutoff for the stock compressesor is 350HP you should safely be able to add 125 HP with no problem, right?

Well let me try to clear it up for you.

The SO motor from california makes 200 HP on a dyno. A HO truck makes 260 HP. The Ca SO has different programming than the HO. The Ca truck makes more torque. The HO has cooling jets under the pistons to help with EGT's.

On my 03 3500's I can see 1250* totally stock. At DD they had an 03 that hit 1265* totally stock. So if we both start at the same EGT's why wouldn't a SO truck end up at the same place as a HO? The SO truck reacts differently to an EZ than a HO. The EZ makes more power on a SO truck. So does the VA CP3 2. So that would lead me to believe that the SO with the new VA could possibly build higher EGT's than a HO. I ran the VA around the block for about 15 minutes and an EZ on level 6 makes more EGT's and pulled harder. I took my VA off and sent it back. The EZ will make less EGT's too.

Alot of people drive their trucks differently. I for one have a hard time believing that you can only hit 1180 with the banks box. It must be set to defuel or something. Level 6 is supposed to be about 100 HP and rail pressure is much higher than stock. The thing we need to remember is that I must drive my trucks alot harder than others. If I can get EGT's in upwards of 1350* in a stock truck then, I bet I could get at least that in a truck with a six shooter... .

Ah no, the Ca makes 460tq th Ho 555tq. The jets are for piston temp and have little to nothing to do with EGT's, just durability.

Come on Greg you you know this. Lets not confuse the issue.

Yea, Your right about the TQ numbers. I was thinking of the difference between the CA SO and the 250 HP SO. I still think that the cooling jets help on egt's

the TQ is the same on the SO and the Cali motor, but the HP is 235 on the Cali. My thinking was 150Hp on the calii motor will have lower EGT then a HO or 600. Your talking about a 100HP diffrence. Unless the same settings for a box make 200HP on the Cali motor and only 100HP on the HO and 600, then I could see the EGT's would be the same.

Thanks, Wayne <-----still confused by this:confused:

Cali motor makes 200 HP. HO motor makes 260. That is 60 HP not 100HP difference. And yes, some of the boxes make more HP on the Cali trucks than they to on the HO. Cali trucks must have a lower Common Rail pressure to start with.

Hmmm, Mine is a 04 and makes 235 at the crank and I thought the reg SO was 250HP and the HO 305HP at the crank. The 600 is 325HP and my cali being 235 so it is 90HP diffrence and 70HP for the HO. I guess my thinking is if the box made the same power the EGT's should be lower on the Cali motor. I have more room for box upgrades before I need toa dd more air, right?

I think the first thing we need to do is install guages so we can have a solid baseline of how our trucks react to egt's. Once you know where you start you can install something that will give you more power. On my stock truck I can see 1200+++ in egt's depending on how much I have in tow, How heavy the load is, and how hard I push it. If you add an EZ to that, you can see temps that are 250* hotter. That is with a 65 HP box. Now try to run a box that makes 125 HP. See what happens there. Other variables are Intake air temperature, and how restrictive your exhaust is. On my other truck, I have 5" exhaust and a Volant air intake, with a Piers bomber lite turbo and an EZ. I have a hard time making 1200*. When I had DDIII's in that same combo I could see 1600*. Add a hundred HP and you get 400* higher temps. So what you are trying to say doesnt make sence to me. A HO makes 265 RwHP. A SO makes 200RWHP. Add an EZ to that and you have 265 RWHP. If you could add another EZ or equivelant HP (DD2's 70 HP) EGT's will climb to 1400* Install the same DD2's on an HO and EGT's will be in the 1250 range.

Greg,well..... I dont know what to tell you. Going up a 6% to 7% grade wot for aprox 10 minutes it gets to aprox 1180. It has plenty of power so I dont think its defueling. since Im not using the speed loader Im not required to use the banks pyro, which means its not going to defuel because of temps. The trans doesnt slip either so no defueling there.

I read the link at truckmoxie. I feel for the guy. Maybe it was the Banks box. Maybe not. kind of like the threads about the TST boxes burning up turbos. I should say that although I consider my truck stock it does have a 4 inch banks and afe pro 7.

Since I feel my truck makes at least the same if not a tad more power than a HO it stands to reason the temps shouldnt be that far off.

Well.

Like I tried to say earlier, driving styles, load, how hard you push it all are a factor. I am glad you are happy with your setup. I am sure the AFE and exhaust help too.....

This is going to really start the flaming. I have 3 03"s ,One SO two HO"S. Here"s the deal the trucks are spec the same except the SO is DEC 02 the HO"s are APRIL 03. The EZ on the SO on level six will spank the stock HO every time,The SO has a ATS trans now,The HO"S 48re stock ,EGT"s about the same,Now put the same EZ"S on level six in both trucks the HO is a little faster Not much ,and pulls a little stronger, EGT"S are 200* to 275* hotter than the SO.
