How can I mount front tow hooks on a 2001 Ram?

I just made a round trip from Salt Lake City to Seattle unloaded, installed 275's, and pulled a 6500 lb trailer from Seattle to Vegas, the back to SLC unloaded. On the way I ran some comparsions between the two boxes. I had previously installed DTT's VB/TC combo.
On an earlier trip from Seattle to SLC I ran a VA at 1925rpm (69mph) for 23. 3 mpg. Retracing the route with the EZ I got 20. 9mpg. Performance differences weren't remarkable.
From Seattle to Vegas loaded, I alternated between the EZ, nothing, and the VA, all at an average of 65 mph. Mileages were 11. 25 with both boxes, 10 without - I was disappointed.
Returning to SLC from Vegas empty, and back to 69mph, I recorded 20. 0 (EZ) and 22. 2 (VA).
Performance with the 275's is very good with both boxes, but the EZ is clearly superior, particularly off the bottom, then over 2000. Any hill requires only a mere tickle of the throttle. If I started at 65mph or getter, speeds were constant and EGT's ran 900-1000. If I was under 65, I could hold or increase speed at 1050-1100 degrees.
Around town with the EZ, the throttle is so responsive it is difficult to keep acceleration within reason. Pulling the trailer, its easy to PO the guy next to you who is determined to not to have you next to him rattleing in his ear. Just tickle the throttle and you can stay right beside him till the next light<G>!
Bottom line - got more pulling power than I can use with my loads, and unloaded is almost too much fun.

Installed my PE-EZ to day and set it on 2nd setting for DD1's. just a wisp of smoke but a bottom end that is fantastic due in large part too DTT t/c&vb hooking up off idle and the great low end respose of the PE-EZ ( better bottom end than the VA ). PO'd more than one hot wheeled honda to day on the freeway. wont have a chance to tow till next month but looking forward to it.

Please excuse my ignorance,
What is a VA and an EZ?

96, purchased used, white, auto, standard size tires

We pull the horse trailer @10k about 3 times a week and we tow up the foothills, the ez gives incredible perf. Look take this for the bottom line. You can jerk the horses down any time you want now. Gotta get them boys helmets so they dont get whiplash from the power

B... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Alright: people who know our area--- hwy 108 divided highway now we have to use throttle control, where as the old days we just had to gun the throttle and hope for the best
Now acceleration can happpen at any point we want it too... ... ... ... .
that is the greatest feeling

Timmer, you'll have to excuse the overvalved group, They can't hear over all those extra valves goin. #ad

The PE(poweredge) and VA(VanAaken(sp?) control fueling in the 24 valve trucks. Since yours is a 96 it's a 12 valve and those boxes won't work on your truck.

Curtis, your suppose to let'em get the box and that way think of all the power he'd have once the rest of the valves show up #ad

OK , for us "PROPER VALVED" types,Which box gives the best mileage? I've read 3 or 4 posts where the VA gives better mileage , but the writers say the EZ is better. I am "ONLY" interested in better mileage.

Thanks for the comparison!

Im interested in the smoke difference. The VA can make a set of DD1's smoke pretty good if you try. It kinda sounds like the EZ may smoke less, which seems to mean better mileage in stop & go situations. Just a guess.

2k, 22k miles, QC, 4x, 6sp, 3. 54,285/75r16 bfg/at, stock air cleaner (reliable), silencer ring "in" (runs better), popup cmpr, 9000 lbs. 14. 5-16 mpg (w/camper), 17. 5-19 (empty). VA, DD1's, PS Boost module, DD Elbow... also, Nitrous Oxide piped direct into the block (stealth - to keep the warranty), twin turbos, 10 gallon per minute fuel pump, ECM right out of Don Garlit's Top Fueler (he gave it to me) (for letting him ride in my truck), Super Modified DD1 Injectors ("Hand Honed" with a 1/4" reamer & my 12v (thats "volts" not "valves") Makita). :) More BOMBING to come!!

<font color=blue>The EZ has three different fuel settings for more options on smoke control. Undo the cover and move the jumper over 1 or two positions = delays the fueling input until higher boost levels are reached.

My ez smokes more than what the va did but seems to perform better, but the egts are higher than with the va. Thanks Kat i will try the adjustment like you suggested! Carl

Got my leaky injector tube replaced - you don't have to automatifally replace the early 98. 5 tubes, but there are not guarantees. I had to replace only one.
Towed my new Airstream 25 (7000lbs) do LostWages (15. 0 mph @ 68mph). Every hill crested easily witht the truck trying to break 70. Hard to hold it back. EGT's never broke 900.
Dyno'ed Sat at the Vegas getogether - 275's and EZ = 258 hp @ 1600. I'm happy.

You have to try the new VA PnP for a current picture of the new tunning that David and Christian put together on the Dyno.

The VA PnP creates the power, cleaner and stays with in the computer paramaters set by the Cummins and Bosch Engineers.

CharlieP, I would replace ALL 6 injector tubes if you have the old style. On my '98 24-valve (which was built Dec 23 1997) I replaced the injector tubes a few months after installing RV injectors. I felt my idle wasn't smooth enough with the RVs, so I installed new injector tubes. Not only did my idle smooth out, the engine felt more responsive and stronger, and mileage improved at least . 5MPG. I would strongly recommend replacing all of them if you have the old style. I don't know when they changed over, sometime during the '98 model year I think.

With the VA on a truck I am very familiar with, one can easily get 21 hwy, with 4:10/auto and the truck is a 4x4... that's cruising at 65mph. Don't know a thing about the EZ, but anything that can be removed/installed easily gets my vote. I would also say that this truck has just the right amount of juice for pulling a 6k travel trailer. Someday I'd like to hook up with some of the NW bombers to try one of their rides to compare... .

Mike R or Rob Hanson or Bill would be a good test bed for you! One word of caution BUCKLE THAT SEATBELT AND HOLD ON!!!!!!!!

Bottom line fellas,
For towing, not hot rodding, which box is the best choice? Dont care about cost.
Thanx Big A
Big A, I'm trying to figure it too. From reading other posts, I think the VA would run the same mpg towing, better empty, and would be less smoke if you have stock injectors. EZ is less expensive. Several mentioned lower EGT's with VA; that alone has me leaning toward the VA, especially for towing. JMO

I've tried the VA without the elbow. It was pretty impressive. I have'nt tried the EZ. My interest is in towing.
Thanx
Big A

I have the VA and elbow (Along with the plug in boost module). Stock injectors for now, thinking about the 275's. Any benefit switching to the EZ over the VA, keeping the elbow. I understand the EZ has a built in boost module.

Or how about just using the PE box? Any thoughts?

Not married to the VA, but would hate to just toss it aside.
