vaccum pump prices

has anybody had to replace there vac pump,mine is leaking oil out of the adapter i replaced the seal and o-ring with no luck so after talking with the garage they say it needs replaced 700. 00!! i sure didnt want to spend that for one so for right know im just letting it go. thought that maybe some of you have incountered this and there is a less expencive way, any help

I had mine replaced by the dealer on my 97 under my extended warranty. If a dealer is to be believed I was told it would have cost me about $1600 were it not for the warranty. I had to return again to the dealer since the pump was dripping oil. I was told the fittings were not sealed properly when the new pump was installed. Buying that extended waranty was a good move. In my experience with both my recent American vehicle purchases I was ahead $ with the extended warranties. I did not get them on my Toyotas - another good move.

Something I have heard of but have never experienced firsthand is to eliminate the stock vacuum pump altogether and replace it with an electrically powered Ford vacuum pump, under $100 and can be installed on the firewall.

Bill, is the vacuum pump the same for a 12v as 24v? I bought a rebuilt one on ebay for 200. 00. The guy told me it was rebuilt by Cummins. The part # was good for my 24v. When I checked the part # with my dlr. parts guy, he said they couldn't get the seal to rebuild them. This pump looks brand new.

Larry, I'm 99% sure they are the same, but that still leaves 1% doubt.

Wish I had my notes - can't find them. I called my dealer just the other day on one for my 95. I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was around $480 if I remember right.



I could double check if you'd like. Just let me know.

illflem if you delet the vac pump what do they do for power steering pump sence the vac pump runs it if it was not so complicated i think i would switch it to the 24-valve style and be dunn with it all to gether i think the 24s just have a power steering pump and no vac if i remember right

Kerber, the 24V does have about the same set up as the 12v, if not the exact same. I know, because the brkt. on mine broke twice, lucky it was while under warranty.

kerber, even though the vacuum brake assist was eliminated on later models it's still used for the climate and cruise controls. Not much of a job for a electric vacuum pump to take over and a heck of a high price to pay to replace a stock item that performs simple functions. I believe on the 24 valves the vacuum isn't even used for the cruise, only the climate control.

Electric vacuum pump

I was asking a mechanic friend about installing another check vavle in the vacuum line. Once we got into the diacussion his first question was "Why don't you just add an electric vacuum pump from a Ford?"



When and if my pump gives up the ghost, I'll probably just cut the hose 4-5 inches above where it enteres the pump and cap the line off. Then add an electric vacuum pump to replace it. There's plenty of room between the PCM and the firewall to mount one.
