The stealers have a gasket/ seal kit but the seal you need is omitted. A local parts place specializing in seals will have them( that's what my mecahnics did) , or do as Bill suggested in above post.

what about the pump?

it has 100 k on it . my starter needed contacts but i opted for the new starter(96 k)you guy's think it will go another 100 k with the seal or ?? thanks for the reply. . :confused: is there a way to get a discount on the pump:{

carson6,

Mine truck/vacuum pump/starter/ has 135,000 on them.

Vacuum pump seal had been leaking for sometime so when I had to break down and have my front end worked on I had them do the vacuum pump also. The dealer quoted them $600. 00 they called a seal supplier instead( My mechanics were amazed that the vacuum pump seal wasn't included in kit from Dodge).

Starter, I was told by retired diesel mechanic that the gear reduction starter on the Cummins woud last as long as the engine.

The only thing I would have to replace were the contact points especially the battery side contact, which I did at around 90,000, the starter is turning the engine over like brand new. ( The contact point cost me $8 from local auto electric shop, a lot better than $400 to $600 for starter from dealer. The shop also had brand new (same brand) starters for $290)

Save your money by the seal kit from Dodge, buy the seal notincluded in kit from local seal dealer or CPFF( go thru mechanic's shop or auto parts store, I have read cpff buys 25 at a time for members I forget the price but it is reasonable ). ( You already spent to much for a starter).

AND use the money you save to buy a more nice toys for the truck.

I have a question? I just had to replace the heater and Air controls in my 96 and when I did I noticed there was oil in and around the vacuum hoses and running down the backside of the control. So now I think my pump is blowing oil as well. Where is it getting the oil? Is it engine oil? How hard is it to replace the seals?

There is a TSB for this. It replaces a check valve in the vacuum lines and also should have been covered under warranty... . mine was done back in 1998 or something like that.

Check the TSB's and I believe it is addressed.

There is a recall on that problem and its 7years no mileage limit. I believe its #720. There is a problem with the check valve and the oil contaminates the whole vacum system and DC will replace everything with any sign of oil in it. It will effect cruise control servo also and all the under dash vacum motors and controls. I had it done on my 96 and had a little hassle with them but this dealership SUCKS big time. If you have your reciept for parts bought they will re-imburse you also.
