I think I have a vacum problem with my 97 2500 slt. My cruse doesn't work and my a/c works but it only blows out the defroster vent. Is the vacum pump mechanical or electrical? If its electrical, is there a fuse I can check?

The vacuum pump is gear driven. Look down where your power steering pump is and you will see a hose that goes back along the motor and up to the power brakes. That's the vacuum pump. Probably a vacuum leak if you don't have vacuum.

If you have determined no leaks(all hoses are connected, no holes ). Look for pinched vacuum lines starting at firewall all the way to o/d and selector swtich.
Other possibilities are bad vacuum pump or bad check valve(on hose near vacuum pump).

Take a couple of minutes and pull a vaccum hose loose from the vaccum tree on the firewall. Its the one that is just to the right of the valve cover. It has a soft rubber end on it. Check the inside of the hose to see if you see any sign of oil in any part of the line. If so, here is what you need to do to cure the problem. First you need to replace the check valve on the side of the vaccum pump(look close about 3 o'clock, you should see a rubber hose coming off of it). Second is to replace ALL the vaccum hoses that feed the tree and the hoses that come off the tree(the one that feeds the cruise control survo and the vaccum operated heater/defrost door actuarator under the dash). Also this is the big one. . you will need to replace the cruise control servo and the heater/defrost door actuator under the dash. I have a 97 2500 and it happened to me and there is NO isb's on this as far as I found, because there was a problem in 96 and the only fix was to install a check valve, the 97 came stock with one. I should be getting my parts from http://www.mopar4less.com out of New Mexico soon. Both parts(cruise control and the actuator was $20 each and $5 shipping to Calif. I don't know about the check valve cost, I had it replaced. I could have done it my self if I had know what it was. As far as I can tell it just unscrews from the wheel side of the vaccum pump. Hope this helps.....

Let me know what you find. .

Rick

RHARVEY,the repair you speak of was a recall on my '95s,I'm not sure about other years or models. Nice thing about having it done under recall was that for some odd reason DC warrenties the parts for 7 years.

Yes it was a recall on other models, but unfortunately it wasn't on the 97's. Someone said that there was a check valve added to the 97's that should have taken care of the possible problem. But sometimes the check valve fails.

Gorf, if you have small enough hands, you can reach under the drivers' side battery. You will notice the small cheesy plastic piece of crap vacume tubing going down there to the cruise servo. Mine has cracked twice in a year and a half, about three inches away from where it goes into the servo. You can't really feel the cracks, you have to pull the line off the servo. Be warned, it's a real PITA to put back on. I've been meaning to replace the whole stinking mess with traditional vacume line and connectors, but have been too lazy #ad
so I just patched it.
