I know, it's off the wall... just like everything else I do :D

We've all puffed on harmonicas at one time of another and marveled that we can make sound by sucking as well as blowing.

Is there anything like a vacuum operated horn in existance and how well do they work? Would our vacuum pumps be good enough to operate one?

Doc

On '94-'95 trucks with vacuum powered brake boosters the pump will only boost the brakes for less than a minute when the truck is idling. I don't see how it could power a horn, maybe a harmonica though.

I agree illflem, but a vacuum tank could make this a possible project, if one could find a horn.

Good thinking Doc, I think (or are we being set up again ;) )

Never know with Doc.

Ford sells a kit to put an air horns on vehicles with out air brakes. It includes a vacuum operated air compress, air tank, Hadley horns, an electric solenoid valve, and hoses and tubing. I don't know about the trucks with vacuum boosted brakes, but the hydro-boost equpped trucks the vacuum pump will not stay up with the compressor. I have the Ford kit on my Cherokee and it supplies enough air to work my self adjusting air bags on the rear.

A Harmonica!!! LOL

I'm visioning a truck pulling to a stop then the sound of Dixie or La cucharacha played on a harmonica (gag).

Course you can't hear it over the Cummins, so this mod is only for Duramaxers!!

The rest of the vision is great, it involves a fiery winch wearin dixie duke shorts struttin out and handin me a beer, while commenting on the probable small size of the Duramax drivers anatomy.

:p

uhh, you do know that a air horn runs off of 100+psi, and a true vaccume is less than 15psi. that might not be enough flow for a loud horn

Well Doc, I used to have a vacuum-operated compressor for the air horn on my Datsun B210. About a useful as a Jarvic Heart with a handcrank. Slow recovery, could never make the same pressure as its electric replacement, and the vacuum line always leaked. I did it because the old B210's had 25A alternators!! We have 140 or better with upgrade. I figure if you lose you vacuum line you'll also lose your cruise control and H/AC controls. With an electric comp, you'll just blow a dedicated fuse. Think I'll get my soldering iron now... ;)

D D

What I didn't say is that on my Jeep I use an electric air compressor by Grove Air products up to 100 psi and the vacuum air compressor continues to 130psi. The Grove is slow too.
