Truck shudders when stopping

Does anyone know if the vacuum pump that supplys vacuum for the brakes and accessories on "95" trucks can handle a vacuum-over-hydraulic brake system. This is on my backhoe trailer. My concern is that I might run out of brakes on the truck and trailer.

Not a pleasant thought.

Does anyone have any experience here?
Thanks, Ronnie

Ronnie,

Back in the days before medium duty trucks had 4 wheel disc brakes with hydraulic boost, we installed an extra vacuum reserve tank on the truck and a vacuum gauge when rigging out a truck to tow an equipment trailer such as yours. It would take longer to get the vacuum pumped down before starting out, but it gave you much more reserve when braking. Also with the gauge you would know if you were getting into trouble.

I have found that the vacuum over hydraulic brakes superior to the electric brakes on heavily loaded equipment trailers such as yours. The main problem with the vacuum-hydraulic is that people wouldn't keep the brake shoes adjusted.

My brother in law has the vac/hyd brakes on his truck and had it for several years GREAT brakes will slide the dual tandems even loaded. Not sure what type kit that he used as I have seen it a couple of times when working on his truck there are two hoses that run from the control under the hood to the connectors in the bed, great system and yes the vacum pump is large enough or I think you would have brake fade. Hope this helps some if not let me know for mor detail as I'll call Tom.

Bill and ramman, thanks for your response. The local trailer business wanted to install a new pump and controls to the tune of a couple of thousand $'s (labor included). Being the type that always thinks I can do it myself, I'm looking at alternatives. I had considered a reserve tank, but, Bill you are right, a gauge would let me monitor vacuum reserve and take appropriate measures. I sometimes suffer from the dreaded slow brain illness. Had not considered the now obvious guage. Thanks.

ramman, if you do have an opportunity to check with bro-in-law I would be most grateful. Thanks

Ronnie
