First, I had the check gauges light come on. . I checked them and it was showing fine, then about 1 minute later the oil pressure plummeted, I pulled it off the road. Any ideas what would make the vacuum pump go bad? I have had one mechanic tell me it could be a lobe in the crank that caused the pump to go out? When I later returned home I noticed I had about a 1 foot diameter puddle of oil on the ground where my truck was parked.

Thanks!

Don't use that mechanic. The vacuum pump runs off the gear train on the front of the engine and has nothing to do with the cam. It is possible you have a blown seal in the vacuum pump that is causing the oil leak.

Turns out the pump threw a blade through the housing and caused the leak. Has anyone encountered this? The mechanic says cummins told him it was a common problem with the 98. 5 and they keep them in stock because it happens so often and it's a "dealer only part" so you can only get it from Cummins.

Yep. The Vac pump blew up on my Dads 1998. 5 just a month ago

It had 230k on it when it went.

If I remember right it was like $700 for a reman unit from Cummins.

You might want to check with fixinrams.com. He can probably come up with something. great guy to deal with. Give him a call.

Can you check that price if possible? Did he get it from a local Cummins parts house? This guy is quoting $2400 from Cummins NW for a new one. $400. 00 less for a remanufactured one.

Like Bloomy said. $299 for reman, $799 (plus $100 core off, making it $699)new from fixinrams. Give 'em a call.
