Think mine's leaking. Dripping from between vacuum pump and steering pump. It's not real bad right now but would like to fix ASAP. Local dealer says I have to buy the whole vacuum pump at a cost of $1800! Not so says I! If any one has had any experience with this leak thanks in advance for your help.

I'm watching mine drip as well. There is a couple of guys who sell the rebuild kit for our pumps. I think we will save around $1,700 or so... Thats a lot of beer.

The oil leak at the seal inside the pump is pretty common. Neither DC or Cummins list the seals in their parts breakdowns. We repair these pumps quite frequently. It takes more time to remove the steering and vacuum pump then it does to replace the seal. If you need the seal give me a call.

ad in issue 46 of tdr for vacuum pump seal kit gould gear and electric ph. 574-862-1392.comes with dvd for install . 59. 99 + s&h.

Thanks to all you guys for your help. I will keep you posted as to how the job goes as soon as I get the seal and the time to pull the pump off. It's a big relief to know I don't have to buy the new pump and yes that's a lot of beer! Thanks again. :)

pump seal kit..

J, I recently fixed mine using the kit from Gould www.fixinrams.com

While his kit is more money than the seal kit from others, it is worth the money. He sends a excellant DVD showing the repair process once you have the pump out of the truck. Also included are some tools for knocking the pump apart and removing/installing the oil seals. They are just PVC pipe and fittings but work great. The vac pump is not that complicated but the DVD sure makes it easy and removes any doubt in your mind about tearing into the pump.

I don't have the numbers off hand but do a search under my name and the words vacuum pump and you will find that Cummins and Dodge now sell seal kits that come from Cummins, the kit costs about $50 from Dodge and about $8 from Cummins. You don't have to buy a whole new unit.

A 5. 00 dollar seal #9376 carquest will fix it. I bought 2 and paid under 10. 00. It worked better than the one I bought with a complete seal (o-ring type gasket and o-ring) kit that I paid over 100. 00 for. Just use care taking the pump apart and putting it back together.

Did the seal replacement today. No more oil dripping! Used the kit from Pete at Gould gear and electric mentioned above. I highly recommend this kit for anyone doing the job for the first time. It is well thought out and comes with everything you need including an instructional DVD which has some good pointers for those not familiar with vacuum pumps. Next time I'll be able to just get a seal from Cummins and put it in without the entire kit but it sure was good to have Pete's kit this time around. BTW maybe I won't need another seal anyway! Thanks to all you guys for your help. God Bless and have a Merry Christmas.
