My vacuum pump decided to puke oil yesterday all over the front end. I called CPFF and ordered his seal rebuild kit and now have a weekend project. One question:

The book (Haynes & DC) both say to leave the powersteering pump on the truck instead of dropping both pieces as a unit and separating them on the bench. What's the best way?

IT IS BEST TO DROP BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. IT WILL LET YOU LINE UP THE SEAL PROPERLY BETWEEN THE P/S AND THE VAC PUMP. HAVE DONE MANY RESEAL JOBS ON THEM. REPAIR TIME SHOULD BE 1. 5 TO 2. 2 HRS. GOOD LUCK!

Definitely leave them bolted together. You don't want to run the risk of damaging that new seal trying to re-join them on the truck. Much easier to re-join them on the bench.

On mine the drive dog on the end of the water pump had some nice burrs on it. Make sure it is burr free or you will cut your new seal when you put it back together.

I didn't want to disconnect the hoses for the PS pump, so left it on the truck and worked on the vac pump on the bench. I didn't seem to have any trouble, and it's over a year now since I did the procedure and no leaks so far. Just be careful and take your time.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I took both pumps off of the truck together. Pretty easy job other than it snowing and being 20°F.
