hello all,

just got the word that my vacuum pump only puts out 10" when it's supposed to produce 30". all other vacuum leak possibilites were eliminated.

the dealers here in b. c. want (choke) CDN$2700 for a new one!!!! :--)

a local fuel injection shop will sell me a reman for CDN$1700!!!

if i could find one at the local wreckers, they know the score and would likely charge me around CDN$1400 for a used one that could go at any time.

someone tell me there is a benevolent saint out there who can rebuild this unit for a mere fraction of the cost!

meanwhile, the brakes still work okay, the pedal feels good most of the time (i've had one or two moments of heavy pedal/no boost syndrome), and i am always able to stop.

any help, or am i destined to buck up for an astronomically, outrageously overpriced thing-a-ma-jig?

cheers,

roy

You could go to a 12 volt vacuum pump. Alot of guys with big cammed street machines use them. I don't see why it wouldn't work in this application. Just a suggestion.

hmmmm, this is worth digging into - there's got to be a way to improve/upgrade the pumps without a ton (literally) of $$$. My '93 has crappy brakes too, at least compared to older power wagons I've had. I'm upgrading the mastrer cylinder on my rig which might help, but without vacuum for the booster there's a whole lot of rig to stop. Hmmm, lemme do some digging on this one... .

We looked at an electric pump set-up for my son's S-10 conversion... . haven't done it yet, but we likely will over the winter.

I found complete kits in the $250 range.

I always wondered if a hydroboost setup from an oldsmobile diesel or 6. 2diesel equiped GM would work with some adapting. I have two of those systems on parts cars out in the pasture. They use the same saginaw style of PS pump like our trucks do.

Only thing with no vac besides brakes is your ac/heating controls are not going to work either.

hi all,

thanks for the tips and advice. i researched as much as possible and came up with the following, which may be useful to others when their vacuum pump gives up the ghost...

1) chrysler dealers want (as usual) an outrageous amount of money (CDN$2700 or US$2260) for a REBUILT pump. cummins dealers in canada want roughly the same amount.

2) old-style pumps for the 91-93 models have been superceded by a newer version that requires a new hose kit. i believe this newer version fits the second and possibly third generations, as well.

3) this newer version (made by delphi) can be purchased for far less than the dealer cost. u. s. diesel sells this pump (BRAND NEW) for US$1080.

4) the best part... u. s. diesel has found someone to rebuild them and sells the rebuilt old-style pumps for US$458 plus a $40 core charge. i ordered one today!

it's still a whack of money for a little piece, but it seems a reasonable price compared to the dealer

hope this helps,

roy
