I have a friend who has lost the seal on his vacuum pump (2001)and DC wants $1,025. 00 just for the pump. Has anyone had such a failure?

What happened to your friend's warranty?

The seal for the vacuum pump is a 38mm od x 28mm id x 7mm thick with double lip, viton material, $14 special order from Napa. DC doesn't list the seal seperately, they are known to go out.

I think it was a seal in my vac pump that leaked a few years ago at around 85,000 miles. My dealer replaced the pump under the Cummins 100,000 mile warranty.

illflem,

The dealer claimed that the pump was not covered under the warranty? They do have several calls into the DC people to see why it's not covered, maybe I'll find out later today.

GSchlegel,

Your reply was troubling too, why would they cover yours and not theirs... maybe a matter of interpretation?

Thanks Ken

Grey Wolf,

My truck is a '96' 12 valve. Dealer said vac. pump (then) was supplied by Cummins and therefore covered under their warranty. Maybe 24 valves are different and Dodge supplies the vac. pump, or the dealer is too lazy or stupid. Wish I could help more.

Sounds like the stealer is trying to live up to his name! I can't see why it wouldn't be covered, is needed for the brakes. Sounds like it's time to call in the regional service manager and start complaining loudly.

Well I don't have all the details yet, but the calls got the job down to $500. 00 out the door, and they're still rejecting the warranty claim.

I have a copy of the Cummins parts catalog for "Chrysler 2001 pickup. " It shows option CP9178 Vacuumm pump. The book states that the supplier of the pump is Cummins. the vacuum pump is actually made by Wabco #914-003-021-0 Cummins #39937193

Well Guys things got ugly, the calls to DC didn’t do much. The customer service gal at the main DC office wouldn’t even turn the phone over to a supervisor when asked to and refused to give her last name and then decided she didn’t want to discuss the matter anymore and hung up on them…. . Great customer service.

When they went to pick up the truck, the dealer stuck to the warranty issue and made them pay the $500, plus when they asked for the defective pump back they refused to give it to them. They said, if you want the pump back we’d have to charge you the full repair amount of $1,400. The last thing is the killer, on their trip to Las Vegas yesterday they see the pump is still leaking oil. Guess who’s going to small claims court when this is all over…………. .

Does anyone know if the vacuum pump is the same on the 2001 and the 1999? illflem left the dimensions for the seal on the 2001 part - curious if they are the same for '99. Same story on mine - leaking and under the 100K warranty but the stealer won't replace it. thanks all
